CAREER PATH… Your Senior Research Project is a direct reflection of you and the career path you wish to obtain in your life. At the conclusion of your project, you will have a portfolio that includes: your biography, your career choice information, research on an institution of higher education where you can receive your training, a college application, a financial aid application, scholarship applications, a professional resume, letter of recommendation, a letter of inquiry, and a job application. A professional job interview will also be required.

WHERE DO I BEGIN? Using “Texas Cares” software (installed on computer): WOW: World of Work: Self Assessment: Work Importance Locater Interest Profiler Enter Interest Codes> Print results Occupation Information: Explore careers using the 4 tabs Research 1 career under each of the 4 tabs and write a summary> Print results Double click on career of interest for your research for your career essay. WOL: World of Learning: Exploring Education: Print your lists of colleges according to your chosen college criteria (Very Good Tab) College Information: Compare and contrast 4 colleges> print off analysis of your top two choices

WHERE DO I BEGIN continued… Don't know how much money you will need to earn in the future? Don't know which occupation to choose? No problem! Go to www.texasrealitycheck.com   Complete Option #1 Reality Check. Complete it the first time as your “dream” life then complete the second time as your “reality” life and print both results. Place them in your binder. Complete Option #3 Occupation Direct. Complete it the first time as your “dream” life then complete the second time as your “reality” life and print both results. Place them in your binder. Write a paragraph (word document) describing your experience and what you learned from this website. Make sure you write in complete sentences and give specific examples. *Turn in a copy of your paragraph to your teacher (one copy in your binder)

MAKE A CHOICE! TIME TO CHOOSE YOUR CAREER! What type of education is required to obtain your career choice? What are the job duties? Salary? Benefits? Drawbacks? Job outlook? Write an essay ( word document) describing your career path. Pretend that your reader doesn’t know anything about the career. Use a lot of description and be specific! ***Use “TEXAS CARES” software: World of Work> Occupation Information for your research. Read through ALL TABS before writing your essay!! *Turn in a copy of your essay to your teacher (one copy in your binder)

NOW WHAT continued… Look for and print off a college checklist of things you need to do in preparation to enroll. Feel free to create your own. Go to www.applytexas.org: download the admissions application, print off, and complete in blue/black ink. Register for the SAT/ACT or TSI. (see Mrs. Lee in CIS for assistance) Print off a Degree Plan for your particular major. How many hours and what classes will be required? Calculate the total cost: tuition and fees, include housing, if applicable.

NOW WHAT continued… Research other financial options…..scholarships, grants, loans

Apply for THREE Scholarships: NOW WHAT continued… Apply for THREE Scholarships: 1. Wolfforth Lion’s Club Scholarship for Reese students 2. Frenship Foundation Scholarship (for Reese students, The link to these two scholarships can be found on the Reese homepage> Student’s tab> Senior Project – ELAR> Scholarships 3. Search for ONE additional scholarship and complete it. (Make sure you qualify and notice the deadlines.) A total of THREE scholarships is required. Read the directions carefully! Short answer questions and essays will be included as well as letters of recommendation. COMPLETED scholarship forms must be returned to your English teacher before ANY course credit is given!!!

***For those going into Military, Workforce, or Other (not going to College): 1. Complete a sample Loan Application for a new automobile. The link is on the Reese homepage >Student’s tab>Senior Project – ELAR>Loan Applications 2. Complete an application to rent or lease an apartment/ house. TURN IN BOTH OF THESE COMPLETED APPLICATIONS TO YOUR TEACHER. MAKE SURE THE APPLICATION IS COMPLETELY FILLED OUT AND ACCURATE.

NOW WHAT continued… In APEX: go to the “College and Career Readiness” class on your Dashboard. Complete these UNITS only: UNIT 4: FINANCIAL AID 4.1 FAFSA and CSS/PROFILE 4.2: Scholarships Grants and Work-Study 4.3: Loans 4.4: Financial Aid Wrap-Up UNIT 5: CAREERS 5.1: My Career Portfolio 5.2: Dress for Success 5.3: Making the Most of Job Experience 5.4: Careers Wrap-Up These TWO units will count as a MAJOR percentage of your Sr. Project grade. Take your time and read, study, and learn all available information. Complete all Study Guides, Journals, Discussions, and Practices available.

WHAT’S NEXT? Congratulations! You have now obtained the education you need for your career choice!

WHAT’S NEXT continued… Create a professional resume. Use Microsoft Publisher to find a resume template. Choose a template that best fits your career. Include three references for potential employers to be able to contact. *Turn in a copy of your resume to your teacher (one copy in your binder) *You will also need a copy of your resume when you go to the office to fill out your application for the interview. Give the copy to Mrs. Morris or Mrs. Atkins. SO…you need three copies!!!

WHAT’S NEXT continued… Now research available jobs in the Lubbock area in your career choice. Print out a job application and fill it out. Use appropriate interview skills Show your knowledge of your profession and degree requirements.

MOCK INTERVIEW PROCEDURES Things to bring to the mock interview: Research binder Additional copy of your professional resume Information on three personal references (name, address, contact number, relationship) Smiling face and good attitude!

Sample Interview Questions: What college classes will you have to take? How many hours? What are the degree requirements? What are the college entrance requirements? What unique skills and talents do you have that would benefit the company? What’s the one accomplishment you’re most proud of? Why? What would you do if management made a decision that you didn’t agree with? Why should we hire you over the other applicants? These are just a few questions that may or may not be asked. Be prepared and confident!
