Lightolier SSL System Approach Products must not be evaluated based on the rated performance of the individual LEDs or other components. Lightolier’s System Approach involves the concurrent design of power conversion, LED circuits, thermal management and optics. This system approach will guarantee that all components will deliver optimum performance and long life. Lightolier engineering used all of the most modern tools to design their new SSL products. Being part of a totally vertically integrated lighting company we used all of the Lumiled, Philips and Lightolier design resources to design for optimum performance. Concurrent design means we have several teams working on different aspects all towards a common design goal

Lightolier First Introduction to Solid State Lighting Recessed & Track Colour Wash Linear Recessed Matrix Wall Wash Cove Colour & White Markers Task Light Lightolier already launched a comprehensive collection of lighting tools. These included color wash a RGBA colour changing system that can produce white and colour lighting effects. In addition we introduced a complete line of step lights, marker lights and task lights each with unique value propositions for your specification efforts.

Traditional Phosphor Converted LED Almost all white LEDs use a royal blue chip coated with phosphor Difficult to maintain consistent coating thickness from chip to chip Phosphor emits light in all directions when converted Up to 60% of the light is reflected backwards into the chip Back-reflected light absorbed by the chip and creates additional heat Technically the phosphor based white LEDs encapsulate InGaN Indium Gallium Nitride blue LEDs inside of a phosphor coated epoxy. A common yellow phosphor material is cerium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Ce3+:YAG). There are inefficiencies in this system as light is reflected back into the chip causing increased heat. The Challenge of LED Binning The performance of each LED is unique White LED’s are typically classified as warm (2700K-3500K), neutral (3500K-4500K) and cool (4500K+) Each Colour consists of several different “bins” Each LED is binned by three measurements: flux (output), Colour and forward voltage (power) Each manufacturer has different bins No two LEDs are the same. This requires LEDs to be sorted in a process called binning. As we try and create white light there are challenges creating specification downlights from white leds and also maintaining consistent color and light levels between fixtures.

LED Colour Consistency In any array, you will have a mixture of LEDs with varying flux and Colour LEDs also exhibit Colour shift over life which increases with higher junction temperatures To achieve uniformity, you need to mix the light from the different LEDs together using a mixing chamber and/or optics As you can see color differences can be considerable. A solution is to mix many leds together to achieve consistent color.

Elements of the Calculite Remote Phosphor Technology Heat sink Calculite 4” trim Royal Blue Led Array The following are the elements of the new remote phosphor design Mixing Chamber Phosphor and glass lens assembly

Calculite LED Array Royal Blue LED emitters are mounted on a metal clad printed circuit board (PCB) in an array Metal core PCBs conduct heat better due to lower thermal resistance. The LED array uses Royal Blue leds as the Blue pump portion for generating white light. These are high efficacy led components.

LED Array Calculite 20W LED board = 16 LEDs in series (8 for 10W) Array is connected to the drive circuit with a locking modular plug There are 2 arrays one for the 20 watt and one for the 10 watt. These LEDS are wired in series which is the most efficient method to wire the LEDs. The voltage across 16 LEDs requires a class 1 driver circuit as it is over 42 volts.

Calculite Mixing Chamber Back-reflected light is redirected out of the luminaire by highly reflective chamber The shallow mixing chamber helps to redirect light out preventing light being reabsorbed by the LED and causing an increase in junction temperature

Calculite Remote Phosphor The phosphor is exposed to less heat Increasing conversion efficiency Uniform emitting surface No visibility of individual LEDs Phosphor works more efficiently when it is cool and because the phosphor is not in direct contact with the LEDS it runs cooler. Unlike most competitors the Calculite light engine is not visible as points of light. There is no visibility of the individual LEDs. The phosphor is yellow in the off state and of course white in the on state.

The Solution Calculite Remote Phosphor Remote phosphor approach Increases efficiency by up to 20% 50,000 hour life (L70) Designed & Tested to IES Recommended Standards LM-80-08: IESNA Approved Method For Measuring Lumen Depreciation of LED Light Sources Lightolier uses a revolutionary new LED platform called remote Phosphor. This technology is 20% more efficient and has an L70 life of 50,000 houts. Lifetime is estimated using the new LM 80 process.

Calculite Phosphor and Glass Lens Assembly Phosphor film is available in 3000k and 4000k Colour temperatures Soon available in 2700k and 3500k Film is bonded to glass lens Glass lens held onto mixing chamber with a metal ring Assembly wet location approved The phosphor lens assembly is made up of a phosphor film laminated to a glass lens. This assembly is held together by a metal ring. The complete assembly is sealed and provides a wet location rating for the all Calculite remote phosphor downlights.

Colour Temperature Remote Phosphor Technology convert Blue LED light to an architecturally preferred 80 CRI 3000K Colour temperature results in a system efficacy of 50 lumens per watt 4000K Colour temperature results in a 10% increase in light level Because of the blue pump the 4000k source will produce 10% more light than the 3000k source. Both have an 80 CRI. The efficacy of the total system out of the fixture is 50 lumens per watt. This is increasing as the LEDs used in the array are improved.

Calculite Optics Designed with Calculite Comfort Optics Delivers true 50º physical and reflected cutoff Reduced aperture brightness The system is still designed to the exacting standards of Calculite with a 50 degree cutoff. The reflector has a special curve to optimize light production from this light form.

Calculite Heat Sink Heat Sink Shape provides increased surface area due to curved fins this improves the rate of heat transfer Overhanging fins helpful in spreading heat and natural convection Black paint has the highest coefficient of radiation. Helps radiative heat transfer. Calculite SSL heat management provides high system performance The heat sink has 4 components a specially die cast finned component a material used to bond between the LED array and the heat sink the metal clad PCB and finally the reflector optic itself which we will talk about later

Thermal Design Approach Use of aluminum spun reflector as part of integral heat sink (patent pending) Reflector is attached to the front side of the metal core PCB Heat conducted from the PCB to the reflector The ambient on the reflector side is cooler than the plenum side which helps thermal dissipation by natural chimney affect The reflector is bonded to the heat sink and LED array during assembly. Lightolier has created a patent pending technology where the reflector is a significant part of the heat removal equation. Lightolier uses advanced simulation tools to model its heat sinks including air flow analysis on the total system. You can see how air entering the fixture flows through and carries away with it heat produced by the LED array.

6” Performance in a 4” Aperture 6 inch Vertical lamp 6 inch Horizontal lamp 4 inch There is a great energy story surrounding this technology. Comparing the 4” led downlight to a variety of 6” vertical lamp and horizontal lamp downlights you can see there is a significant improvement in lumens out of the fixture from 36 lumens per watt to 50+ lumens per watt. This comes from a higher optical and electrical efficiency. Calculite remote phosphor has Higher driver efficiency and lower initial power Higher optical efficiency Better lamp maintenance

Project Comparison CFL to LED Calculite 20W LED downlight compared to a 26W CFL Equal illuminance Lighting power density reduction 1.1 W/SF to 0.74 W/SF 25% reduction in energy consumption In the end you have a 25% + reduction in power density when you compare a CFL project to a n LED project.

Light Engine Assembly to Frame-In-Kit The light engine itself which includes the reflector optic connects to the frame and driver with a modular connector. The connector is locked in place with a simple screwed plate.

Calculite Powercore SSL Driver The preferred method of regulating LED drive current is to drive the LED with a constant-current DC power source The light output of an LED is proportional to its forward current There are currently no ANSI standards for power supplies so it is critical that the driver match the electrical characteristics of the LED or array it is driving There is energy lost in the power conversion Calculite Driver is Class 1 Philips Powercore technology ( 95% efficient) Powercore drivers are designed to maximize efficiency for each application The driver system was designed specifically for Calculite and uses the Color Kinetics Powercore technology. This technology won the award in 2008 for the best patent in the world. The driver system is 95% efficient

Calculite Powercore SSL Driver Electronic Power Supply : 120 or 277V 347V (Step Down Transformer) Encased (same driver for both 20W & 10W) Overload and short circuit protection, thermal protect against overheating Low noise potted construction for even demanding theatre applications Minimum Starting Temperature : -20º C Dimmable with standard electronic Low Voltage (ELV) dimmers. The driver system is available in 120,277 and 347 volt configurations. The potted construction makes the system silent and the same driver can be configured in the factory for 10 watt or 20 watt LED arrays.

Dimming Capability In comparison to compact fluorescent products which require specific, and often expensive, dimming controls Calculite solid-state down lights can be dimmed down as low as 5%* using off-the-shelf electronic dimmers. The technology is dimmable using standard electronic dimmers.

Conventional equipment typically offers separate warranties for the lamp and the ballast. Assembled in State of the Art clean room in Lachine, Quebec Calculite remote phosphor is rated at 50,000 hours at L70 or 70% light output.. This rating is based on IESNA LM80 recommended standards for testing.
