How to Search for Books x xClick Books, E-books, Videos & More to access the Kean Catalog. Click here

The Kean Catalog may be searched by keyword, title, author, and subject. Scroll down to see more searching options.

For example, to find books that cover transcultural nursing, type these keywords in the Find This search box, then click Search. Enter your keywords, then click Search. The Search button is toward the bottom of the screen.

Examine the search results list for titles of interest. Make note of the library location and call number. Click the title to view the complete record. Books located in the Main Collection may be checked out if the Status is Available.

Here’s the complete record for one of the books in the results list: Books are shelved in alpha- numeric order according to the Call Number. For instance, the RT books in the Main Collection are shelved on the third floor of the Library. Send this record to yourself by typing your address here, then clicking the “ ” button.

How to Search for Specific Journals by Title x Journals, magazines, and newspapers are all types of periodicals. To locate a specific journal, go to the Library’s home page, then click Periodicals List. Click here.

Click here Under Locating periodicals in the Kean University Library, click Periodicals List to access a searchable list of the Library’s journal subscriptions.

Check if the Library subscribes to the Journal of Transcultural Nursing by typing this title into the Quick Search box, then click Go. Type a journal title, then click Go.

If the journal title appears in the search results, this means that the Library subscribes to the periodical and full-text articles are available. A checkmark under Print Holdings means that the Library has the journal in print or microform. Click the checkmark to access the journal’s Kean Catalog record for detailed location information.

A checkmark under Full Text Access means that the journal is available online through the database indicated below the title. Make note of the date range available. Click the database name to access the database. When off campus, you will be prompted to enter your Library Barcode number.

How to Search for Journal Articles by Subject x From the Library homepage, click Articles & More to access the Databases and search for journal articles on a particular topic. Click here

You will get a screen that looks like this: If you are looking for a particular database, click the first letter of the database’s name on the alphabetical Jump to menu. For instance, click the letter C on the Jump to menu to access CINAHL with Full Text.

If you are not sure which database you should choose, scroll down to the Databases Listed by Format and Subject section, then click the appropriate format or subject. Scroll down under the Databases Listed by Format and Subject heading, then click Health Sciences to access a list of databases relevant for nursing.

Under the heading Health Sciences, click Medicine, Nursing & Allied Health to access a list of databases that provide health-related articles. From this list you can select databases such as CINAHL, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Health Reference Center Academic, and many others.

When you are off-campus, after you click a database name you will be asked to type your Kean Library Barcode. You can get a Kean Library Barcode by bringing your Kean photo ID card to the Circulation Desk in the Nancy Thompson Library. Type the Barcode without spaces, then click Enter.

Searching for Scholarly Articles in the CINAHL with Full Text Database The acronym CINAHL stands for Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature. The CINAHL databases provide access to numerous scholarly journal articles.

Remember, to access the CINAHL with Full Text database, go to the Library homepage, then click Articles & More. Click here

Then click the letter C on the Jump to menu. Under Databases Listed Alphabetically, click C to access CINAHL with Full Text

Alternatively, under Databases Listed by Format and Subject section, click Health Sciences, and then under the Medicine, Nursing & Allied Health subject area click CINAHL with Full Text. The CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature) databases are key resources for nursing literature.

The database defaults to the Basic Search screen. Either type keyword search terms in the Find box or click the blue Advanced Search tab to access the Advanced Search screen: Enter your keywords here. Alternatively, switch to the Advanced Search form.

Here’s an example of a Basic Search: African American* and mammogr* Use the word “and” between keywords. Use the * (asterisk) as a truncation symbol so that the database will look for longer spelling variants of your keyword (such as, mammograms, mammography). Put a checkmark next to the words Peer Reviewed to limit your results to articles published in scholarly journals. Click Search.

You should get a list of articles that mention the keywords “African American(s)” and “mammograms” or “mammography.” Click any article title to access the article’s citation and abstract (summary). Click the title to see the article’s citation and abstract.

When you see HTML Full Text, PDF Full Text, or Linked Full Text in the article record, this means that the database is providing access to the full-text article. Sometimes CINAHL provides links to full- text articles. Simply click the full-text link to access the article.

Click the Tour to find out if the Library subscribes to Preventive Medicine. This article was published in November 2006 in Volume 43, Issue 5. When there is no link for full text, click the TOUR button to check the Periodical List automatically and find out whether or not the journal is available through a different database or as part of the Library’s print holdings.

In this case, the article published in the journal Preventive Medicine (volume 43, issue 5, 2006, p. 385) should be available in full-text format through the ScienceDirect database. Click ScienceDirect to access the database and to track down the article.

If you click the Tour button to search for a journal title in the Periodicals list and find no records, you may request a photocopy of the article you need through Interlibrary Loan. A search for Journal of Cancer Education yields no results.

The Interlibrary Loan request form is available online from the Kean University Library Homepage at: Click here.

Searching for Scholarly Articles in the ProQuest Research Databases The Library subscribes to numerous nursing, medical, and allied health databases. The ProQuest Research Databases provide access to many health- related articles focusing on gender, ethnicity, and other topics.

Access the ProQuest Research Databases by going to the Library homepage, then clicking Articles & More. Click here

Then click the letter P on the Jump to menu. Under Databases Listed Alphabetically, click P to access ProQuest Research Databases.

The database defaults to the Basic Search screen. Either type keyword search terms in the Basic Search box or click the green Advanced Search tab to access the Advanced Search screen: Enter your keywords here. Alternatively, switch to the Advanced Search form.

Here’s an example of a Basic Search: postpartum depression* and (latin* or hispanic*) Use the word “and” between keywords. When you want the database to search for either one word or another, group these words inside parentheses and put “or” between them, as in (latin* or hispanic*). Use the * (asterisk) as a truncation symbol so that the database will look for longer spelling variants of your keyword (such as, latino, latina). Put a checkmark next to the words Scholarly journals to limit your results to articles published in scholarly, peer- reviewed journals. Click Search.

You should get a list of articles that mention the keywords “postpartum depression” and some spelling variant of either the word “Latin” or Hispanic.” Click any article title or the Abstract link to access the article’s citation and abstract. Click Abstract to see an article summary.

In the Sort results by menu, choose Most relevant first. Most databases automatically sort the search results by date, putting the most recently published articles at the top of the list. Look for the Sort results by menu, and change Most recent first to Most relevant first.

When you see Full Text, Text + Graphics, or Full Text - PDF in the article record, this means that ProQuest is providing access to the full-text article. Sometimes ProQuest provides links to full- text articles. Simply click the full-text link to access the article.

When you do not see a full-text link, consult the Library’s Periodicals List to see whether or not the journal you need is available through a different database or as part of the Library’s print holdings. Make note of the article’s date, volume number, issue number, and page numbers. Click Find a copy to check the Periodicals List automatically. We need to find out if the Library subscribes to Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences.

Click TOUR Full Text – Check for full text via Tour Resolver to search the Periodicals List. Click TOUR Full Text – Check for full text via Tour Resolver.

In this case, the article published in the Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences (volume 26, issue 4, 2004, p. 463) should be available in full-text format through the Sage Premier 2007 database. Click Sage Premier 2007 to access the database and to track down the article using the article’s date, volume number, issue number, and page numbers.

When you search for a journal title in the Periodicals list, you might find that some databases have an embargo period for the date you need. Look for database options with no embargo period. If there are no options for full text, request a photocopy of the article through Interlibrary Loan. A search for American Journal of Community Psychology indicates that there is a 12-month or 365- day embargo period for most of the databases (except Factiva). This means articles are not available full-text online until a full year after the article’s publication date, in this case, September 2007.

The Interlibrary Loan request form is available online from the Kean University Library Homepage at: Click here.

Where to go for help: Call a Kean University Reference Librarian at the Ask a Reference Librarian from the Kean University Library Homepage ( Simply click Ask a Librarian, then click .
