5 Proxy Account Searching when off-campus Fill in your email address and create a password. First time users and those who have forgotten their password will be asked to enter their barcode number.

6 Next you will be asked to type in your name, email, and create a password. When you access the databases the next time you will only have to type in your email and password. Proxy Account Searching when off-campus

7 Principles of Searching Similar ideas are expressed in a word with different endings. Government Governing Governable Govenor,etc. govern* will retrieve all of these words The asterisk * is a wild card or truncation symbol. All words starting with the letters before the asterisk will be retrieved

13 EBSCOHOST EBSCOhost Premier is a portal to 30 databases providing indexing and abstracting for tens of thousands of scholarly journals, magazines, and reference sources in all areas of study. Many of these databases include full text articles. The academic level of the publications covered varies depending on the database, but the brief descriptions on the opening page will help you determine whether a particular database is appropriate for you.

14 Selecting a database Select ‘ Articles via Databases”. ”. Select the first letter of the database name. Select the database name.

15 EBSCOHOST In EBSCOHOST you can search many databases simultaneously. Go down the list and select all the databases relevant to your search by checking database selection box.

16 EBSCOHOST Enter your terms in the Find field. You can use Boolean operators (and, or, not) with a standard search. If available, field codes and search history may be used with your search. Select search options to refine your search. You can use limiters or expanders to broaden or narrow the focus of your search.

23 J-STOR JSTOR provides full-text access to more than 300 scholarly journals offering more than 886,000 full-length articles going back to 1838. Here are the subject areas addressed: African American Studies, African Studies, Anthropology, Archeology, Asian Studies, Botany, Ecology, Economics, Education, Finance, Geography, History, Language & Literature, Latin American Studies, Mathematics, Middle East Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Population Studies, Slavic Studies, Sociology, and Statistics. Updated frequently, JSTOR covers important research articles, reviews, opinion pieces, and other items published in key journals.

24 J-STOR Begin searching with basic search or click advanced search. Advanced search provides additional help features not found in Basic search.

25 J-STOR Enter the keywords in the boxes provided. Select the search criteria such as you only want to view articles. Select the discipline(s). Click search

26 J-STOR Review the list of articles retrieved. To view the articles click the title link. You can view the complete article online or you can download to your desktop or flash drive.

28 CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online The most comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs, CIAO publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs.

32 Google Scholar Google Scholar searches the Web for articles, books, and other scholarly materials in many different disciplines. Most searches return an assortment of citations, abstracts, and links to full text. To link Google Scholar to the City College Library's full text offerings, click "Scholar Preferences," type "City College," and click "Find Library." Then check the box next to "City College - Find fulltext at CCNY."

33 Google Scholar Begin searching in the search box. Google Scholar will retrieve full text articles that are located in the City College databases. Click the “Find Fulltext at CCNY” link.

35 Interlibrary Loans Finding materials not owned by CCNY Libraries

36 Interlibrary Loans Interlibrary loans are free ▪ Reprints of journal articles ▪ Reprints of magazine articles ▪ Temporary loan of books, some dissertations, reports, documents – but not textbooks Books owned by CUNY must be requested using CUNY+ through CLICS Allow 2-3 weeks for delivery. You will be notified via email when the book has arrived at the Circulation Desk. Loan period is 3 weeks. Articles are sent to your email account.
