IACC-ITS.PPT June 1, 2001 What We Did To Meet Your Needs n Storage –Upgraded central storage, allocation pending policy decisions on allocation scheme –Working with IACC and information service providers to profile users and uses in order to plan storage burn rate and prepare campus for next forklift upgrade n Remote Access –Working with IACC to understand remote access needs and create appropriate service and support model n Flexible network access in Classrooms –Wireless and DHCP as mentioned by MDS and Help Desk

Heavy planning activities this year: »Participate in creation of working drawings for construction »Train Tech Services staff as inspectors »Lead CSU wide effort establishing active electronics baseline »Begin building web accessible database of all network assets and connections on campus n Worked with CSU to establish Gigabit Ethernet connectivity between Cal Poly and SLO County Office of Ed for Digital California Project (DCP). n Sponsored wiring work for Library Millennium project n Upgrade Campus Backbone – equipment here, summer install n Upgrade ResNet – Residence Hall Network is 5 years old, equipment here installation this summer as well.

IACC-ITS.PPT June 1, 2001 Additional “behind the scenes” work n Established campus firewall and virus scanning requirements – expect implementation next FY n Transition to new Telephone Billing system with no increase in billing trouble calls n On-line telephone bill trial n ITS Disaster Recovery Plan in place – CSU audit approved n Eliminated 48% of misdialed E911 calls by changing the off campus access digit from '9' to ‘7’ n System installs, upgrades and support for ITS services such as Power, Blackboard, Oracle, OpenMail, Java Labs, Advanced Workstation Lab, COB Sun incubator, etc. n Upgraded Backup and Restore hardware and software for central systems n Plan in place for Mainframe upgrade to ensure a supported environment for legacy student systems until CMS student module is available.

IACC-ITS.PPT June 1, 2001 Benefits Derived in FY 00/01 n Campus network upgrades – backbone, building and ResNet will ensure ITS can provide the bandwidth required to meet established service needs for programs such as CMS and new services expected to grow such as video serving, imaging, GIS, etc. n Separation of ResNet and campus traffic removed contention for bandwidth, enhancing response times for computer based teaching and learning activities. n High bandwidth connectivity to SLOCOE removes a bottleneck limiting the collaboration between Cal Poly and K-12 teaching and learning activities. n DHCP dramatically increases flexibility by removing the need for users to reconfigure their computers when moving about campus

IACC-ITS.PPT June 1, 2001 Benefits Derived in FY 00/01 n The ITS Disaster Recovery Plan reduces risk of service interruptions and time to restoration. This also positions ITS to help other campus entities build their own DRP’s. n Storage infrastructure forklift enables ITS to create policies and service definitions that are based on established requirements and not formed by extremely limited space. n Backup and Restore infrastructure positions ITS to seriously consider outreach to distributed servers for service.
