John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 X-Ray Beamline and Experiment Layout John Arthur LCLS Photon Systems Manager

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 This Talk Taking LCLS from construction project to facility Ideas for optimizing scientific utility

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 SLAC organization during LCLS construction

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 LCLS Possible SLAC organization after 2009

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 Possible initial operations plan 6000 hr/year operation includes user operation and machine studies one hutch in operation at a time expt changeover takes few hours access allowed to any hutch not in operation current science teams get some form of priority access during commissioning period of 1-2 years do pioneer experiments in all science areas soon

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 Staffing Instrument support: 2 scientists, 1 engineer, students for each instrument Optics/Detector development group Laser group supports operations and development of future systems (gun research, expt laser development) Accelerator group Requires nearly 150 people (60 PhD) Requires a large increase in scientific staff during LCLS commissioning (~30 PhD)

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 Future LCLS upgrades

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 Ideas for increasing utility Optimizing diagnostics package Access to any hutch not in operation Pop-in beam deflectors mirrors, crystals Flipper mirrors

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 X-ray diagnostics X-ray groups joining with accelerator groups to define the LCLS commissioning strategy This will help prioritize diagnostics effort and details of FEE layout

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 Soft x-ray side beam Insertable mirror system: 2 Be or B4C mirrors at 15mrad incidence angle create side beam with 2 keV cutoff 60mrad

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 AMO instrument on soft x- ray side beam

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 Advantages of side beam AMO instrument does not have to move Access to AMO hutch with hard x-ray beam in pipe Fast change-over

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 Issues with side beam Access with beam requires apertures which guarantee beam stays in pipe Additional mirror set needed Mirrors take up some room in FEE

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 Flipper mirrors are not gone LCLS and LUSI considering improved schemes, which fit experiments better Some components could be part of LCLS, if funding permits beam transport Some components will be built by LUSI crystal deflectors

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 FEH with three beamlines XPCS Coherent x-ray imaging High energy density science

John Arthur X-ray April 20, 2006 Summary Starting to work on creating the LCLS user environment Will require a large increase in scientific staff XES and LUSI will form the core Planning now to allow future improvements for increasing operation efficiency Some improvements will happen in 2009 time frame
