1 X-Ray Endstations Update
John Arthur

2 The X-Ray Endstation Systems group will create the infrastructure required for experimenters to make best scientific use of the LCLS radiation

3 The Endstation Systems group will provide:
Personnel protection systems (PPS) Protect people from x-rays, lasers, etc. Machine protection systems (MPS) Protect machine from clumsy people Network and computer support Cables, networks, servers, data storage Beamline controls Hardware, software Synchronized laser system fs laser system synchronized to FEL Prototype detectors Instrumentation for initial atomic physics experiments

4 Where the Endstation Systems are located
Near Expt Hall Far Expt Hall 250 m

5 Near Experimental Hall
The Near Experimental Hall Design at Title 1 stage Endstation systems participated in development of design Will support initial experiments and easily allows future expansion

6 Near Experimental Hall
The Near Experimental Hall Shops, setup space FEL beam Experimental hutches Laser room above hutches

7 The Far Experimental Hall
Efficient use of underground space Simultaneous operation of 3 stations Multiple exits Allows for future expansion

8 The Far Experimental Hall
Office and shop space Experimental hutches FEL beams Laser room

9 The FEH is underground 21’ 30’ 9”

10 Principal divisions and staffing
Science Advice Project Planning J. Hastings J. Scholes Management J. Arthur S. Moeller Mechanical, Vacuum Controls Lasers Detectors Atomic Physics 9 people 2 people 2 people 1 person 2 people

11 Staffing profile Year FY04 FY05 FY06 FY07 FY08 Total XES staff 2 6 14
17 who is hired management group heads controls group everyone else

12 Achievements in FY04 Plan for FY05 Doubled staff size (to 2)
Technical Design Review gave good marks, some constructive criticism Baseline budget and schedule prepared No long-lead procurement Add 4 staff members (physicists/engineers) Start detailed design of major systems Begin R&D on advanced 2-D x-ray detector Plan for FY05

13 Effects of FY05 Continuing Resolution
Delay new hires until March-May Affects Controls area most Get help from LCLS controls group Begin support for detector development in January (3 mo delay) Major long-term impact if delay continues Slight delays for other tasks -- no major impact

14 Recommendations of EIR, Lehman review
Shift detector development program from PED to R&D Done Institute more reviews of detector program External detector advisory group Yearly review of program progress Go/no go decision for final construction before FY 07 Coordinate well with LLNL effort Being done

15 Major endstation systems milestones
Level 2 PPS certified in NEH FY08 PPS certified in FEH FY08 LCLS start operation FY09 Level 3 FY04 TDR Complete detailed schedule EIR review Complete 2D detector MOU Award initial R&D funding for 2D detector FY05 Design review #1 for 2D detector FY06 Network final design review Laser final design review Order lasers Design review #2 for 2D detector FY07 Start installation in NEH Start installation in FEH Beamline controls final design review Laser operating in NEH Laser operating in FEH Complete installation in NEH FY08 Complete beamline controls Complete network and cabling Complete mech/vacuum Complete acceptance tests of detectors

16 The endstation systems will provide the infrastructure for the interface between the LCLS source and its scientific applications This group is just starting its work, a major buildup will occur in FY05-06, and most of the work will be done in FY06-07 Group is coordinating with conventional construction and x-ray transport groups, and will work closely with instrument development project Recent EIR and Lehman reviews gave good marks to the endstation systems plan No long-lead procurement in this area Risks exist, but this is not a high-risk area for LCLS Summary
