LCLS Transition to Science DOE Status Review of the LUSI MIE Project The Instrument Readiness Review Process John Arthur LCLS Experimental Facilities Division June 30, 2009

2 J. Arthur jarthur@slac.stanford.edu 2 IRR Process NEH ARR – June 30, 2009 An IRR is… Part of a layered approach for assuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of LCLS Consistent with SLAC Guidelines for Operations Chap. 23, Accelerator Safety Reviews and Unreviewed Safety Issues Described in XFD document 030-00200-000 Motivated by plans to add 6 major instruments for x-ray experiments at LCLS over 3-year period A way to assure that all USI associated with new LCLS instruments have been identified and mitigated before starting commissioning of the instrument A tool that will also be used for reviewing major changes to instruments after they are operational

3 J. Arthur jarthur@slac.stanford.edu 3 IRR Process NEH ARR – June 30, 2009 An IRR is not… A replacement for normal SLAC WPC A replacement for the SLAC USI process Appropriate for minor repairs or changes to LCLS instruments Appropriate for review of each LCLS experiment

4 J. Arthur jarthur@slac.stanford.edu 4 IRR Process NEH ARR – June 30, 2009 IRR Process What is reviewed Documentation Physical inspection of instrument Qualifications of staff Product of review List of documents reviewed Record of presentations, interviews List of review participants Pre-start and post-start findings of review

5 J. Arthur jarthur@slac.stanford.edu 5 IRR Process NEH ARR – June 30, 2009 How IRR process is used Coordinated by Instrument Scientist Takes place when instrument is nearly complete, but allows time to address pre-start issues May require modification of SAD and/or ASE Modified SAD must be approved by SLAC Director Modified ASE must be approved by DOE SSO After all IRR pre-start issues are closed, LCLS Director authorizes start of commissioning

6 J. Arthur jarthur@slac.stanford.edu 6 IRR Process NEH ARR – June 30, 2009 Who is involved in IRR Instrument Scientist coordinates Radiation Physics group reviews shielding, beam containment issues SLAC safety committees review issues in their areas IRR committee has formal meeting to assess status of reviews, identify pre-start and post-start issues Committee composed of experts from SLAC and other DOE labs Invited by LCLS Director

7 J. Arthur jarthur@slac.stanford.edu 7 IRR Process NEH ARR – June 30, 2009 Tentative schedule for LCLS IRR’s AMO instrumentmid-July, 2009 SXR instrumentMarch, 2010 XPP instrumentJuly 2010 CXI instrumentJanuary 2011 XCS instrumentMay 2011 MEC instrument2012 IRR for early test phase of instrument may occur earlier

8 J. Arthur jarthur@slac.stanford.edu 8 IRR Process NEH ARR – June 30, 2009 Hutch 2 Hutch 3 soft x-ray lines hard x-ray line 10m Hutch 1 NEH lower level X-ray hutches and control rooms IRR for the AMO instrument AMO instrument

9 J. Arthur jarthur@slac.stanford.edu 9 IRR Process NEH ARR – June 30, 2009 AMO instrument Designed to focus LCLS x-ray beam, and study interactions between intense x-ray pulses and atoms or small clusters

10 J. Arthur jarthur@slac.stanford.edu 10 IRR Process NEH ARR – June 30, 2009 AMO IRR status Installation nearly finished Working with safety committees Collecting memos from committee chairs Tentative date for IRR: July 15 Choosing committee, organizing review

11 J. Arthur jarthur@slac.stanford.edu 11 IRR Process NEH ARR – June 30, 2009 End of Presentation
