The Battle of Antietam A Presentation by Rob Lee and Cory Jolley

Location The Battle of Antietam was fought on September 17, 1862 near Shaprsburg Maryland and Antietam Creek.

Casualties The bloodiest single day battle in American history with 23,000 casualties 2,108 killed 9,540 wounded 753 captured/missing 1,546 killed 7,752 wounded 1,018 captured/missing

Who Won? The Battle of Antietam is a tactically inconclusive victory for both sides, they both suffered high losses while the Confederacy loses less troops, the Union gains significant strategic ground in Maryland.

Significance The battle of Antietam was the first significant battle of the Civil War to take place on Northern Soil. It was after this battle that the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln.
