To SPA or not to SPA Beth Kubitskey Eastern Michigan University 1

The Old Days my first introduction to SPAs 2

NCATE SPA for All Programs identified standards Programs determined where standards covered in course work Programs created key assessments across coursework College created online reporting system for assessments (livetext) 3

Choice? Are our programs aligned with national SPA standards? Do we have data to demonstrate candidates’ learning with respect to the standards? Do we the capacity to write the reports? Will we be able to submit the reports 3 years before the visit? Do our programs value SPA recognition? 4

Now we have a choice - YES Mathematics Science English Language Arts Early childhood Elementary Reading 5 Technology All special educations Languages TESOL All Leadership …

Do we have data? Do we have data!! Over 500 assessments (over 300 active) 6

Do we have the capacity? Motivated faculty Support data people Existing data collection system Some funds 7

Do our programs value SPA recognition. The devil you know…. 8

Now we have a choice - no Social Studies and Histories… (did not feel State standards aligned with national standards so documenting for the SPA problematic) 9

Timeline Reports due three years before visit EMU visit 2017 (reports due Fall 2014) With all the changes, got an extra year. Reports due Fall

11 How EMU defines SPA time
