Information on Orangi Town... Population Size: Approx. 2.5 million Fun Fact: It is the largest slum in Asia Past: Early settlers were blue collar workers from the Sindh Industrial and Trading Estate. Present: 75% of residents work on garment, leather, solid waste recycling and service sector inside the slum itself. Ethnic Groups: Muhajirs, Sindhis, Punjabis,Kashmiris, Seraikis, Pakhtuns, Balochis, Memons, Bohras and Ismailis Solutions: Low-Cost Sanitation Program; a Housing Program; a Basic Health and Family Planning Program; a Program of Supervised Credit for Small Family Enterprise Units; an education Program; and a Rural development Program in the nearby villages.

Information on Machar Colony... Population size: Approx. >700,000 majority being children 5-15 Fun Fact: Another name of the area is Fisherman’s Colony Occupations: Many people are involved in the fishing industry with most people employed as shrimp peelers, fishermen, fish cleaners or ship cleaners in the ship breaking industry. Ethnic Groups: Bengalis, Muhajirs, Sindhis, Punjabis,Kashmiris, Seraikis, Pakhtuns, Balochis, Memons, Bohras, Ismailis and Christians.

Information on Lyari Town... Population Size: 627,195 (as of 1998) Fun Fact: Many of Pakistan’s top soccer players come from Lyari Town with the crime rate significantly dipping during the FIFA World Cup season. Type of town: Smallest and oldest town, but also the most densely populated in Karachi. Amenities: Few schools, substandard hospitals, poor water system, limited infrastructure and broken roads. Main religion: Large Zikri Muslim community.

Government efforts... 1.Orangi Pilot Project in Karachi and Community-led total sanitation in rural areas. 2.National Sanitation Policy & a National Drinking Water Policy have been approved in 2006 & 2009 respectively to improve water & sanitation coverage & quality.

Problems faced by slum dwellers... 1.Quality of services is still poor, evidenced by intermittent water supply in urban areas and limited waste treatment. 2.Poor drinking water quality and sanitation lead to major outbreaks of waterborne diseases with an estimation of about >3 million Pakistanis get infected by the waterborne diseases. 3.Service providers do not cover costs of operation & maintenance due to low tariffs & poor efficiency. Thus, they depend heavily on government subsidies & funding. 4.Government also lacks funding.
