Aim : SWBAT develop body paragraphs for an informative essay using their graphic organizers. 71

Do Now Look at the ideas in your graphic organizer. How will you turn those ideas into a paragraph that contains your information AND makes sense?

Why are body paragraphs important? Body paragraphs are the “meat” of your essay. They contain the information, explanations and examples that drive your ideas in the essay. Each paragraph must be constructed carefully in order for your ideas to be developed fully.

Body Paragraph # 1: Funny in Farsi First sentence: Give the author’s purpose: Why did Dumas write “Funny in Farsi”? Second sentence: Give the author’s perspective: What is Duma’s perspective on America and Americans? Next few sentences: Explain the strategies Dumas used to convey her perspective and give an example for each from the text. Last sentence: State how the strategies connect back to her perspective.

Body Paragraph # 2: Of Beetles and Angels First sentence: Give the author’s purpose: Why did Asgedom write “Of Beetles and Angels”? Second sentence: Give the author’s perspective: What is Asgedom’s perspective on America and Americans? Show a contrast: how is it different from Dumas’ perspective. Next few sentences: Explain the strategies Asgedom used to convey her perspective and give an example for each from the text. Last sentence: State how the strategies connect back to her perspective.
