SUMMARIES What is the main idea?

SUMMARY: WHY ARE WE REVIEWING THIS AGAIN? What is a summary? A summary is a brief statement that provides the key details and main idea of a text. (A summary should NOT have every detail!) What is a Main Idea? A main idea is the controlling idea of a text. (you can also think of it as the main focus of a text) What is the difference? A main idea is usually a one sentence statement that focuses on the single focus of the passage. A summary contains the main idea but also important supporting details.

SCORING A SUMMARY 1234 Information Significant information is irrelevant or missing. Main idea unclear. Reread passage for main idea. Information is loosely related to main idea.
