This lesson is designed to: Review the definition of matter. Review the physical properties of matter and how we use our senses to describe them. Discuss how certain properties help us to sort matter into categories or states of matter.
Matter: It’s what the world is made of.
What is matter? Everything in our universe is made of matter. All matter takes up space and has weight. There are 3 basic states of matter: Solid, liquid, Gas
What do you know about matter? Liquids Gases Solids
But what is the difference between a solid, a liquid, or a gas?
Solids Solids hold their own shape. Solids have weight. Solids take up space.
Liquids Liquids take the shape of their container. Liquids have weight. Liquids take up space.
Gases Gases spread out to fill the entire space given. Gases have weight. Gases take up space.
STATES of matter? What would it take for matter to move from one state to another?
Energy determines the state! Solid + Energy = Liquid + Energy = Gas
All matter is made of molecules… This is one water molecule (H 2 O)… This is two H 2 O molecules…
Molecules in Solids: Are packed tightly together Molecules only have space to vibrate. Have very little energy
Molecules in Liquids: Are loosely packed Molecules flow freely Have medium energy levels
Molecules in Gases: Move freely Molecules shoot every direction Have LOTS of energy
Add or subtract energy, and matter changes state!
What will happen when we add the energy from the sun?
