1 This lesson is designed to:
Review the definition of matter. Review the physical properties of matter and how we use our senses to describe them. Discuss how certain properties help us to sort matter into categories or states of matter. Slide 1

2 It’s what the world is made of.
Slide 2 Matter: Here are some notes It’s what the world is made of. 2

3 What is matter? Slide 3 Everything in our universe is made of matter.
All matter takes up space and has weight. There are 3 basic states of matter: Solid, liquid, Gas

4 What do you know about matter?
Slide 4 Solids Gases Liquids

5 But what is the difference between a solid, a liquid, or a gas?
Slide 5

6 Solids Slide 6 Solids hold their own shape. Solids have weight.
Solids take up space.

7 Liquids Slide 7 Liquids take the shape of their container.
Liquids have weight. Liquids take up space. Slide 7

8 Gases Slide 8 Gases spread out to fill the entire space given.
Gases have weight. Gases take up space.

9 What would it take for matter to move from one state to another?
STATES of matter? Slide 9 What would it take for matter to move from one state to another?

10 Energy determines the state!
Slide 10 Gas + Energy = Liquid + Energy = Solid

11 All matter is made of molecules…
Slide 11 This is two H2O molecules… This is one water molecule (H2O)…

12 Molecules in Solids: Slide 12 Are packed tightly together
Molecules only have space to vibrate. Have very little energy Slide 12

13 Molecules in Liquids: Slide 13 Are loosely packed
Molecules flow freely Have medium energy levels Slide 13

14 Molecules in Gases: Slide 14 Move freely
Molecules shoot every direction Have LOTS of energy Slide 14

15 Add or subtract energy, and matter changes state!
Slide 18

16 Slide 16 What will happen when we add the energy from the sun?
Here are some notes 16
