HISTORY The history of tennis dates back several thousand years (12 th /13 th century) Tennis originally was known as “lawn tennis”, and formally is still called that in Britain, because it was played on grass courts by Victorian gentlemen and ladies. It is now played on a variety of surfaces.

MASTER THE COURT Before you can start playing tennis, you need to understand the layout of a tennis court. Here are the basics: The tennis court has two sides that are separated by a net in the middle. oThe deuce side, or the right side of the court oThe ad side, or the left side of the court

The court has alleys on either side, and if one player hits the ball in his opponent's alleys in a game of singles, he loses the point. Each court has a right service box and a left service box. The server's goal is to serve the ball into the service box on the opposite side on his opponent's court. So, if the server is standing on the deuce side (the right side) of the court, he needs to serve the ball into his opponent's right service box. Each player's court is framed by the baseline at the bottom and the singles sidelines on each side of the court. One player's ball must land on or within these lines of the opposing players court during a rally to be considered in.

TENNIS COURT DOUBLES COURTSINGLES COURT Furthest outside lines on the court Inner sideline on court Back end line on court BASELINE/SERVING LINE

HOW TO PLAY Tennis is played in single or doubles The first server is determined by spinning a racket and seeing what side it lands on, (similar to flipping a coin) Serving begins on the right hand court, and must be served into the diagonal serving box on the opposite side Every serve results in points The ball must be hit after only one bounce on a side The ball may be hit before it bounces except on the serve A ball that lands on the line is good/fair Scoring is: love, 15, 30, 40 game Each game must be won by 2 points To win a set, you must win 6 games. You must win a set by 2 games. Winner of a tennis match is the first to win 2 out of 3 sets.
