Proclamation of 1763, Intolerable Acts Stamp Act, taxation without representation Causes of the American Revolution

Proclamation of 1763 Great Britain gained the French territory in North America after the end of the French & Indian War (Seven Year’s War). A proclamation is an announcement.

The Proclamation prevented colonists of the thirteen colonies from settling or buying land west of the Appalachian Mountains.

. The colonists were angry because many already had land in that area.

The Proclamation gave the King a monopoly in land bought from Native Americans.

King George’s reason for the proclamation was to create Britain's huge, new North American empire.

King George III also wanted to calm the relationship with Native Americans.

He did this by creating guidelines of trade, settlement, and land purchases on the western frontier.

King George III issued this public statement on October 7,

Outcome Although the acts were intended to check the colonists conflict with Britain, they only inflamed the situation.

Stamp Acts A law passed by the British government in It required a tax payment to Britain on a variety of papers and documents, (including newspapers) that were produced in the American colonies.

Why? It was a way for King George to control the colonists and punish them for leaving Britain.

Special stamps were to be attached to the papers and documents as proof that the tax had been paid. concise.britannica.com

The stamp tax was the first direct tax ever levied by Britain on the Americans, who rioted in opposition.

The American colonists petitioned King George III to cancel the act, which he did in

Taxation without Representation A phrase, generally attributed to James Otis about student.britannica.com

Colonists were angry because they were being taxed by a British parliament.

“Taxation without representation is tyranny.” - James Otis The colonists didn’t think it was fair that they were taxed and had no representative in England to represent their point of view. Tyranny is dictatorship or cruelty to a group of people.
