The Standard Measurement System The Standard Measurement System is what we use in the U.S.A. The Metric Measurement System The Metric Measurement System is used mostly in science and all around the world. This system uses the integer, 10 as a basis to convert between smaller and larger units. This system uses these most commonly known units as follows with their abbreviations for the following categories: Length and Distance Meter (m) Mass and Weight Gram (g) Volume Liter (l)

Common Metric Conversions The Box below shows a conversion chart of common metric prefixes in the Metric Measurement System.

Steps to Converting 1. Identify the units given. 2. Identify the unknown units to convert to. 3. Multiply by the proper conversion factor. 4. Solve and Answer the question.

Example 1 Catherine went to the store that was 130 yards away. She started out jogging, and then she walked the rest of the way. She jogged four times as far as she walked. How far did Catherine walk? Write the answer in feet.

Example 2 Josh is making 35 cups of lemonade, which has two ingredients: water and lemon juice. The recipe says to mix together 6 times as much water as lemon juice. How much water does Josh need? Write the answer in fluid ounces.

Example 3 Casey bought 5 pounds of pretzels for her party, where there will be 10 guests. Each guest will receive an equal amount of pretzels. How many ounces of pretzels will each guest get?

Example 4 A local hospital recently conducted a blood drive where the collected 80 pints of blood from donors. The hospital was hoping to collect a total of 8 gallons from the drive. Did they meet their goal? How much more or less did the hospital collect?

Example 5 Emily has a pet snake which is 5 feet long. Her friend Kristen has a pet snake which is 5 inches long. Kristen thinks her snake is longer than Emily’s because she says 50 is larger than 5. Explain why or why not Kristen is correct.

Example 6 Ben helps his dad make chicken soup. The recipe makes 15 cups of soup. If they each eat 2 cups of soup and freeze the rest, will the leftovers fit into a 64-ounce container?

You Try 1 Jesse needs 13 gallons of paint to finish painting the exterior of his barn. If he uses 10 quarts of the paint for the doors, how many quarts will be left for the siding on the barn?

You Try 2 The food pantry distributes 10-oz bags of rice. If three 5-lb bags are donated to the pantry, how many 10-ounce bags can be made?

Example 7 Charla is taking a trip on an airplane. The airline limits the mass of carry-on bags to 14 kilograms. Charla weighs her bag on her scale, which only measures in grams, and finds that it weighs 13,750 grams. Is the mass of Charla’s bag over the limit or under the limit, and by how much?

Example 8 Robert went to his friend’s house that was 1 kilometer away from his house. When he left his house, he started jogging toward his friend's house, and then he walked the rest of the way. He jogged twice as far as he walked. How far did he walk? Write the answer in meters.

Example 9 While training for an Ironman competition, Johnson swam 0.86 km, biked for 22.4 km, and ran 4.25 km. The following week Johnson decided to work harder. He still trained twice a week, but he doubled the length of his swim and his biking and tripled the amount he ran. How much further did he travel this week than he did in the first week, in meters?

Example 10 Jocelyn borrowed 3.75 kg of flour from her grandmother to bake 3 batches of cookies and 2 cakes. Each cookie recipe called for 225 grams of flour. Each cake recipe needed 1.2 kg of flour. After baking, how much flour was Jocelyn able to return to her grandmother?

Example 11 It is recommended that athletes drink a minimum of 0.24 L of water for every 20 minutes of athletic activity. John plays tennis for 3 hours. His water bottle holds 1,500 mL. Will he have enough water to meet the minimum requirement? If so, how much water will he have left? If not, what is the least amount of water he will need to put in his bottle when it is empty? Express your answer in liters.

Example 12 Rochelle creates a Super Fruit Smoothie. It contains 1/10 of a liter of apple juice, 2/5 of a liter of orange juice and 1/8 of a liter of grape juice. She has 3 jugs. Jug 1 can hold 0.3 liter, Jug 2 can hold 6 liters, and Jug 3 can hold 750 ml. Which jug is the most suitable for Rochelle to serve her Smoothie in? Explain why you have chosen this jug.

You Try 3 Jennifer wants to convert 7.85 meters to centimeters, but she does not have paper, pencil, or a calculator. Describe a method she can use.

You Try 4 Ethan lives at one end of Park Avenue. Brian lives at the other end of the avenue. It is 5.8 kilometers from one end of Park Avenue to the other. If Ethan walks 2.79 kilometers toward Brian's house, how many meters does he have to walk to get there?
