Learning How to Long Jump By Jordan Powell

What is the Long Jump? The Long Jump is a track and field event that requires one to jump for distance rather than height. The purpose of the long jump is to run down the runway and jump off a board as far as you can into a pit of sand.

Basic Steps to Long Jumping Step 1. The judge calls you up. Step 2. Prepare mentally for your jump at your marked spot. Step 3. Begin running building up speed down the runway.

Basic Steps Cont. Step 4. As you approach the board you gather all your speed and strength and jump. Step 5. While in the air hold your feet up as long as you can until you land. Step 6. As you land, kick feet out in front of you bringing your arms forward as well in order to land.

Rules Rule 1. You can only have one start mark on the runway. Rule 2. You only get six jumps and you cannot retake them. Rule 3. If you jump past the board your jump does not count, your foot must be on the board or behind it for it to count. Rule 4. The judge measures the closest part of your landing from the board.
