Aston Moore The Development of the TJ - Related to Women

Introduction My background Outcomes for today We will explore if there is a different in technical model for men and women Triple Jumpers? We will explore some of the issues in applying the correct technical model We will explore the physical limitations in applying the correct technical model We will explore the implications for the athlete and the preparation programme The Development of the TJ - Related to Women

Are There Any Differences In Technique Between Men & Women? The Hop: The Step: The Development of the TJ - Related to Women

Comparison: The Hop

Comparison: The Step

The Development of the TJ - Related to Women The Technical Limitations The Step The evolution of men triple jumping – Phase Distance Ratio Early 1900s: The best jumps were produced with big hops and jump phases Typically, step phases measurements were below 25% of the total distance Distances limited to around 16.00m Mid 1900s: TJ distances increase inline with the improvement of the step Distances between 16.50m & 17.00m was now possible Present Day: Optimised phase ratios, specific to the qualities of the individual athlete THIS IS THE EVOLUTION OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TRIPLE JUMP REGARDLESS OF SEX

The Development of the TJ - Related to Women For the first 3 years, distance improved primarily due to increases in the hop and jump (due to improvements speed) Over the next 3 years distance improves due to increases in the hop and step (again due to improvements speed) The rise in the step is met with a decrease in the jump phase. Gross effect is an overall improvement in the triple jump itself Over time the athlete learns to cope with the load a bigger step places on the body & the jump phase will start to improve again

How do you go about changing things: Understand what you are dealing with – the mechanics It begins with the hop landing Having reached, the hopping leg is pulled down and backward, making contact with the ground just ahead of the body COM The intention of the jumper is to react out of the hop, rather than drive into the step phase The leg on the ground should be the one doing most of the work, not the free leg (step leg)!! The Development of the TJ - Related to Women

Going Into the Step: a.Driven knee into the step position – not foot b.More or less maintaining the angle at the knee throughout the swing action c.Foot stays beneath or behind the knee joint – not ahead d.Dorsi flexion of the foot Encourage the athlete to feel the pause between taking off and landing the step

The Development of the TJ - Related to Women Practice Drills : The whole  Small – Normal bounds - with the intention to be springy – Don’t reach too far ahead with landing leg (hip not feet) – free leg will be too far behind making the next phase late or swung Practice Drills : Then Part – to refine  Repeated step take offs over mini hurdles  Repeated step take offs over mini hurdles into 3 normal steps & jump into pit. Practice Drills : Then the whole again  Short approach (5 strides) hop, into step

The Development of the TJ - Related to Women The Physical Limitations What are we looking for?  Strength – General and specific – Eccentric & Reactive – Hip, Knee and Feet  Speed – Acceleration and Maximum – Technical Running – Structure of the runway Accurate Maximal at the correct point

The Development of the TJ - Related to Women General Limitations Who are we looking for?  Age - between 15yrs and 17yrs  Height - between 170cm and 1.86cm – High jumpers (with PBs 1.65cm-1.75cm) – Multi Eventers – Netball players  Courageous  Risk Takers  Bit of a Tom Boy

The Development of the TJ - Related to Women Take Away  There should be no differences between the development of women & men triple jumping  The development of the step is the limiting factor for both sexes – Technical and Physical  All aspect of the developing athlete must be accounted for with special emphasis on particular areas, at key points along the timeline of the athlete’s career  Technique is emphasised in the early stages followed by strength, with speed development liberally spread throughout all the stages
