Exchange server 2003

Mail system Four components Mail user agent (MUA) to read and compose mail Mail transport agent (MTA) route messages Delivery agent that stores messages for later retrieval by users Optional access agent to connect user agent to message store – Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) and Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4)

What is exchange server software that runs on servers that enables you to send and receive electronic mail and other forms of interactive communication through computer networks. Designed to interoperate with a software client application such as Microsoft Outlook, Exchange Server also interoperates with Outlook Express and other client applications.

messages are sent and received through a client device such as a personal computer, workstation, or a mobile device including mobile phones or Pocket PCs.

how it is work ? The client typically connects to a network contains exchange where the mailboxes are stored. The centralized servers connect to the Internet and private networks where messages are sent to and received from other users.

Communication between client and exchange server computers running Microsoft Office Outlook communicates with the server running Exchange Server through the MAPI protocol that includes powerful messaging and rich collaboration capabilities. Exchange Server also accommodates other client access through its support for – Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) – Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4) – Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). Microsoft Outlook Web Access, a service in Exchange Server, accommodates what are known as thin clients (Web browser–based access clients).

installing Exchange Server 2003 Prior to installing Exchange Server 2003, there are certain Windows Server 2003 components that must be enabled on the server because of the level of integration Exchange has with Active Directory and the Windows operating systems. For Setup to complete successfully, you must have the following services installed and enabled on your server: – Microsoft.NET Framework – Microsoft ASP.NET – World Wide Web service – Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service – Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) service

After having installed the Windows components required by Exchange Server 2003, the next step is to prepare Active Directory for the Exchange installation. Preparing Active Directory involves running – ForestPrep – DomainPrep -two utilities that prepare the forest and domains.

Active Directory consists of three partitions that store data: The schema partition The configuration partition Domain partition. -ForestPrep updates the schema and configuration partitions in Active Directory. Therefore, the account used to run ForestPrep must be a member of the Schema Admins and Enterprise Admins security groups. -ForestPrep is a setup switch for Exchange that, when run, extends the Active Directory schema to include Exchange Server 2003–specific classes and attributes. ForestPrep

To run ForestPrep, insert the Exchange Server 2003 installation CD, and from the Run you start Setup with the /forestprep switch ForestPrep is run once (in the forest root domain)

DomainPrep DomainPrep prepares the domain partition. must be run in each of the following domains: – he forest root domain – All domains that will contain Exchange Server 2003 – All domains that will contain Exchange mailbox-enabled objects (users and groups), even if the domain does not have its own Exchange Server 2003 server NOTE: You must install the exchange service (run domainprep in each domain you want its user to use the exchange service To run DomainPrep from the Run you start Setup with the /domainprep switch

DomainPrep The DomainPrep switch creates the groups and permissions required by Exchange Server Two security groups are created by DomainPrep: Exchange Enterprise Servers A domain local group that contains all Exchange servers running in the forest Exchange Domain Servers A global group that contains all Exchange servers running in the domain you have selected To run DomainPrep, you must use a user account that is a member of the Domain Admins group in the local domain.

Installing After the preparation start the installation setup program Main steps: Choose the installation type Choose the name of the Organization Choose component to setup

Installation Types There are two primary types of installations available when the Microsoft Exchange Installation Wizard starts. They are: Create a New Exchange Organization new Exchange Server 2003 organization will be created in the forest. Because Active Directory supports only one Exchange Server organization per forest, you can create a new organization in a forest only if one does not already exist. Join Or Upgrade An Existing Exchange Server 5.5 Organization

The previous will install the service but if you want to manage the exchange organization (which is different as concept from the forest) install exchange management tool

Client’s Setting We start with the server where the administrator will give the client an account on the exchange server when she create a new account

Cont.. Second step is to prepare the client workstation to download the messages from the exchange server which usually done by using MS outlook -Add new account -Choose the server Of the new account To be the exchange server

To activate the account you must sent a message to it and you can make it done automatically (batch script or send it manually) The exchange sever must installed in a domain environment and uses NTFS files
