University of Nebraska  Lincoln R School of Natural Resources Water Center Research Outreach and Extension Teaching

About the Water Center The Water Center implements and facilitates water and water-related research, extension, teaching and public outreach programming within the NU system. Has been operating since 1968, and was established as the Nebraska Water Resources Research Institute by Congressional mandate in The Water Center is part of the School of Natural Resources, and is located in Hardin Hall on UNL’s East Campus.

The NIWR Network The Water Center is one of 54 water resources research institutes forming a network at land grant universities nationwide. National Institutes for Water Resources The UNL Water Center is Nebraska’s water institute

Academic Programs Over 140 faculty in many departments work on water issues such as water quality, engineering, economics, agriculture, planning, policy & habitat. Work is often done collaboratively across disciplines and with public and private sector partners to address real- world water problems. Students can choose majors, internships & research opportunities to fit their interests. When it comes to preparing for a career related to water, there is no place like Nebraska!

Water Center Goals To develop and implement programs in water science and selected aspects of environmental studies associated with agriculture and natural resources; To establish and maintain appropriate linkages; To expand the financial resource base for both water and environmentally-related programs from private and governmental sources through aggressive grantsmanship. Programs include research, teaching, outreach and extension, and technology transfer.

Water Center Focus Areas Effects of pesticides on stream, lake and wetland ecosystems. Agricultural best management practices. Lake restoration through nontoxic chemicals. Groundwater denitrification. Improving irrigation technology. Measuring groundwater quality impacts from confined animal feeding operations. Annual tours, seminars and conferences. Information for students and the public.

Water Sciences Laboratory The Water Sciences Laboratory is part of the Water Center. Its mission to support environmental and water related research by providing technical services and expertise in analytical and isotopic methods. Director of laboratory services Dan Snow, UNL Vice Chancellor for Research Prem Paul and Nebraska Third District Congressman Adrian Smith tour the Water Sciences Laboratory in 2007.

Water Resources Research Initiative WRRI seeks to strengthen the University of Nebraska’s efforts to be a key resource in:  Teaching  Research  Outreach and Extension in water sciences, water management, and water policy and law to serve Nebraska and to be recognized as a national and international leader in these areas.
