TASK PROCESSES SOCIAL PROCESSES COMMITMENT PROCESSES

team perspective: CONTENT vs. PROCESS

Effective teams thoughtfully plan out their task processes first …these processes guide them throughout their project or task

A common element of teams that are able to capitalize on opportunities and withstand unexpected hardships is that they have well-designed team processes

Concept of self-fueling spirals When a well-designed team encounters a positive event, it spirals upwards

When a well-designed team encounters a negative event, it maintains

When a poorly-designed team encounters a positive event, it maintains

When a poorly-designed teams encounters an unexpected negative event, it falls into a downward spiral

Effective teams go through a series of preliminary design steps to ensure that their processes will be effective

Creation of a team mission and articulation of team goals provides a common understanding of team purpose, sense of direction, and member commitment

What roles do we need to accomplish our goals? task/technical roles maintenance or social roles

Who is best qualified to fill the roles the team requires? Assignment to a role that a team member is incapable of completing, or does not like, may be detrimental to the team’s performance

The Team S.W.O.T Analysis S = strengths our team possesses that should facilitate our success W = weaknesses our team possesses that we need to compensate for to be successful O = opportunities our team may have that we should anticipate and plan for T = threats our team may face that we need to be prepared and plan for

Established team norms signify what behaviors we feel are important to the maintenance of our team and the attainment of our goals

An extension of identified team norms is a formal team responsibility contract which formally commits each team member to the team and its goals

Team Operating Guidelines: How do we want to function as a team?

How we define success at the team level, and contribution and performance at the team member level? …it is important to define these up front so we can assess how close we are to success and if we are on the right track
