Three Phases of Selecting Staff §Pre-interview §Interview §Post-interview

Activities in Each of the Phases §Announce the open position §Analyze the candidate data that is forwarded to you §Prepare for the interview itself Pre Interview

Interview Format §Welcome the candidate §Describe the purpose of the interview §Communicate essential information about the job and the agency §List prior knowledge, qualifications and experience and ask for verification during interview §Develop hypothetical scenarios that each candidate is required to address or engage in to demonstrate their strengths in required areas

§Give candidate opportunity to ask questions and reassess interest in job. §Thank candidate for coming. l each candidate should have individual interview form developed for them. §The final step. l The final step of the interview is to provide the candidate with a brief but honest assessment of their strengths and weaknesses Interview Format, continued

After the Interview §Selecting the right candidate can be difficult if there are several qualified candidates. §A good interview form and good notes taken during interview will help. §Let chosen candidate know why they were chosen §Address any areas that need improving or developing §Contact candidates NOT chosen §Keep notes to reply feedback for candidates inquiries

Methods and Activities in Staff Development §Sponsored In-service activities §Credit or non-credit courses §Electronic networking §Professional Associations and conferences §Professional journal reading §Study tours §Workshops, clinics, seminars

Professional Development Plan §A plan is a combination of the previously listed activities, plus others that can be included to develop the individual. §Plans usually done once a year usually include a list of activities, with beginning and target dates from completion, a cost if appropriate and a state of the expected goals of the activity. §Activities can either be part of a group or they can be individual in nature. §Note: the book does not give much detail on the plan but I believe that you can gather that as an administrator you are responsible for the advancement and refinement of the people who are part of your organization.
