Pop Art by Stephan Jules

Origins of Pop Art ●In 1952, artists in London regularly came together to discuss mass culture’s place in fine art, the found object, and science and technology. ●Britain was still emerging from the post-war years during this time. ●However, the people of Britain were very curious with American popular culture. ●Things that were discussed among the people of Britain were Western movies, science fiction, comic books, billboards, automobile design, and rock and roll music.

Origins of Pop Art Cont. ●During the 1950s, certain artists in New York City began the the movement known as Neo-Dada. ●Pop Art began to emerge during the 1960s from the Neo-Dadaists.

What is Pop Art ? ●Art based on popular culture and the mass media. ●It went along with the spread of pop music and the new youth culture. ●It characterized a sense of optimism during the post war consumer boom of the 1950’s and 1960’s. ●Its aim was to present a challenge to traditions of fine art by including aspects of mass culture. ●Another one of its goals was to blur and question the boundaries between “high” art and “low” art. ●Famous Pop Artists are Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Claes Oldenburg, and Tom Wesselmann.

Characteristics of Pop Art ●Consisted of popular but ordinary objects that were transformed into art ●Bright and vibrant colors that stand out ●Focusing on the contours, shapes, and basics of a picture
