3 What is Pop Art? Pop art is a visual art movement that emerged in the mid 1950s in Britain and in parallel in the late 1950s in the United States. The coinage of the term Pop Art is often credited to British art critic/curator, Lawrence Alloway in an essay titled The Arts and the Mass Media, although the term he uses is "popular mass culture"

4 Characteristics of Pop Art
Pop art is a reaction to abstract expressionism which struggle to express the emotion of the individual. Pop art focused on the mass materialistic, consumerist culture By focusing on these rather ordinary images, they were basically holding a mirror up to society and saying "this is what we have been reduced to".

5 Characteristics of Pop Art
Pop Art developed primarily in the United States and Britain. In the US, it was linked to the wealth and prosperity Pop Art in Britain was less brash, and had a more nostalgic flavor.

6 Pop Art Artists Richard Hamilton "Just What Is It that Makes Today's Home so Different, so Appealing?", considered by many to be the first Pop piece because of its many references to popular culture and consumerism.

7 Pop Art Artists Jasper Johns Jasper Johns used popular imagery such as the American flag and beer cans in their paintings, prints, collages and "combines".

8 Pop Art Artists Andy Warhol Warhol paintings of famous American products such as "Campbell's Soup Cans“ Four pictures, of the same image, with a different color in each panel. And usually he would print the images using a silk screen.

9 Pop Art Artists “Go for Baroque”
Roy Lichtenstein Employed a comic strip style in his paintings and manipulated those illustrative techniques to great aesthetic effect. “Go for Baroque”
