Indirect Characterization T.H.I.E.V.E.S S.T.E.A.L.

 Indirectly characterize the characters based on the following quotes: (Holt text pg1242)  1). Lennie: “Lennie covered his face with his huge paws and bleated with terror.”  2). (About Lennie) “You’d drink out of a gutter if you was thirsty.”  3). George: “Now, look-I’ll give him the work tickets, but you ain’t gonna say a word. You jus’ stand there and don’t say nothing.”  4). (To Lennie) “No, stay with me. Your Aunt Clara wouldn’t like you running off by yourself…”

 T: Emerging Theme Based on the chapter  H: Heading/Title with explanation  I: How does the Imagery establish the tone of the chapter?  E: Effective words that have an impact on the overall tone of the chapter  V: How are the vocab words used in the text?  E: What information do the end-of-chapter questions deem important?  S: Summarize the chapter in 1-2 sentences.

 Turn in Chapter 1 Packet for a grade  Keep Chapter 2 questions on your desk.  Respond to the following journal prompt  1). How does George and Lennie’s reactions to the old boss reveal aspects of their characters?  Summarize what happened when they met the boss.  What did George do?  What did Lennie do?  What does that reveal about their personalities?

 Turn in chapter 1 worksheet(s)  What do the interactions between Lennie, George, and the other characters [introduced in chapter 2] reveal about our protagonists?  Who is introduced in chapter 2?  What happened when interacting with Lennie?  What happened when interacting with George?  What do the interactions convey about Lennie and George?

 Life lesson, meaning, moral or message about life or human nature that is communicated by a literary work.  Odyssey: Hospitality, Perseverance, Vengeance, Cunning over strength, Female adversaries, Achieving goals (Home), Obedience, Loyalty  What are some possible emerging themes in “Of Mice and Men”?  What are we learning from the conflict and characters so far?

 How do Lennie and George change/develop over the course of the text?  How do their personalities help add to the conflict?  Look at how George treats Lennie. What does that say about their friendship?  What are some emerging themes so far?  How to the themes add to the story?

 Follow along as the audio plays.  Fill out the STEAL chart as we go.  Complete the Chapter Questions after reading the entire chapter.  Complete THIEVES worksheet after all information is gathered.
