Figurative Language-an independent study Let’s figure it out!!!

Let’s Review!! Figurative Language is… language that includes figures of speech and is not literal. Writers use Figurative Language to… help the reader visualize what is happening in a story or poem. There are many types of Figurative Language but we will focus on… Simile Hyperbole Alliteration Metaphor Personification Onomatopoeia Oxymoron Idiom Allusion

Directions Over the next couple of days, you will be exploring 9 types of Figurative Language. While working in pairs OR trios, you will read examples and listen to songs that include specific types of Figurative Language. You will be required to interact with the pages in your notebook. Please use the same format explained to you in class. Please follow the schedule provided to you at the beginning of class.

Simile First, read the definition and highlight it! Next, read the example. Then, out to the side, explain the LITERAL meaning. Now, read the Non-Example. Next, read the TIPS. After this, turn the Non-Example into a SIMILE!! (Use the tips to help you!) Write the example you created on the provided chart. This will allow me assess how you are doing!!

Simile-Lyrics Each figure of speech contains a set of lyrics. Each set contains an example or examples of the figure of speech. First, read the provided lyrics. Now, out to the side, describe the situation. Next, UNDERLINE, with PENCIL, the examples of Similes in the provided lyrics.

Oxymoron-This one is done differently due to it being in a different format! An oxymoron is a phrase that contains an apparent contradiction. Read the examples on your mini-chart in your notebook… Clearly misunderstood-These 2 words are totally opposite when used a part, but together mean it is easy to see you didn’t understand Freezer burn-Once again, these 2 words alone mean the opposite, but together they mean something that has been in the freezer too long and contains ice crystals!! Now you try…in your notebook, tell what pretty ugly means… Check yourself…Pretty Ugly… This means someone is REALLY not nice to look at!!!

Oxymoron-Challenge Read the following “cheesy” paragraph. Try to identify the oxymorons (there are 3). Write them on the Oxymoron page in your notebook (out in the margin or any available space). Ever noticed that it's simply impossible to find seriously funny oxymorons online? The only choice is to ask one of those paid volunteers at the library for help. They can provide you with examples from documents that were found missing almost exactly one hundred years ago.
