1 World Literature Welcome back!!! (Day 1)
Target: Students will be reviewing all of their vocabulary tests to prepare them for the SLO Thursday.

3 Work Session Welcome back guys!! Okay so here is a little over view on how these next 6 weeks will go. This week it is crucial that ALL OF YOU COME TO CLASS!!! But seriously if you don't come to class this week you will miss out on super important review because.....YOU HAVE YOUR SLO THURSDAY!! Yeah, remember that pre-test yall just Christmas treed. Well, this is the real thing!! So if you are going to miss a day IT BETTER NOT BE THURSDAY!!! get it? Okay so if you have any old vocab tests get those out for me. I have a lot of them so lets pass these out and go over them. We will be review key vocabulary: Context clues Figurative Language Inferences Connotations

4 Figurative Language – Describing something by comparing it to something else; goes beyond literal meaning for new ideas or insights on subject. Simile – Direct comparison between two unlike things, using like and as. Metaphor – Implied comparison between two unlike things – sometimes using a form of a being verb. Alliteration – Repeated consonant sounds occurring at the beginning of words or within words. Onomatopoeia – Words to mimic sounds, appeal to sense of hearing and bring description to life. Personification – Gives qualities of a person to an animal, an object, or an idea. Hyperbole – Exaggerated statement used to heighten effect, emphasize a point.

She touched people all across the globe, including a young white woman from Kansas who named her daughter after Maya, and raised her son to be the first black President of the United States. (Applause.)" Who is she alluding to in this quote? A) Barack Obama B) Herself C) Maya Angelou D) A random person First before you even answer the question; what does ALLUDING mean??

6 2) He had always wanted to serve his country, but this seemed like madness. He was supposed to fight in a war in a foreign land, helping to protect people whom he didn’t even know. Michael had a strong sense of patriotism, but he was worried about the bombs, death and carnage that could await him in Iraq. He pondered whether he would ever see his family again. Based on the passage, what can you infer about Michael? A) He feels proud of his country. B) He is looking forward to the challenge of being in the military. C) He is afraid of going into battle. D) He regrets joining the military.

9 Work Two more class days till the SLO!!!! I want you guys to do amazing on this. I know this review sucks and it is a lot of work but you will be super proud when your grades come back!!! So today if you can guess we are focusing on Inferences and Context Clues. That worksheet was all about Inferences. So, now we are going to look at some context clues....does anyone remember the SHARKS?!? Remember nemo....the first time I taught this!? So, we will not finish this entire worksheet but lets aim for AT LEAST the first 30, then if we finish going over those we will see how far we get. Take this home if you want to have more practice!! It is yours to study. BUT I NEED IT BACK!!!

14 Work Session So today we are going to start out with this lyric chart. Using the words that we have been working with (they are still on the board to help you) we are going to play three songs and you will find 1 or 2 examples for each vocabulary word. Then we have a quick 28 question worksheet that we will go over.

15 Closing Clear your desks please for a POP QUIZ!! Don't worry if you paid attention today you will make a 100. Any questions before you take the SLO tomorrow?!
