The Circulatory System. Function  Consists of the heart and blood vessels  Carries oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells and remove carbon dioxide.
Circulatory System Transports nutrients and oxygen to the body cells Transports waste products (carbon dioxide, excess water, salts) away from the body.
Why is it important? Your body’s cells depend on the blood vessels to bring nutrients & remove wastes.

BLOOD

THE PURPOSE OF BLOOD IS: Move oxygen throughout the body Carry waste to the kidneys Fight infections and heal wounds Carry nutrients from the digestive system throughout the body

WHAT MAKES UP BLOOD? 55% = Plasma Transports red and white blood cells and platelets Is made up of 90% water 43% = red blood cells Carry oxygen and carbon dioxide 2% = white blood cells Fight infection Platelets = large pieces of cells that help clot blood

WE ALL HAVE RED AND BLUE BLOOD! Blood that is BLUE is oxygen-poor blood. Its oxygen has been used up and it is headed to the lungs to get more oxygen Blood that is RED is oxygen-rich blood. It has come from the lungs where it received oxygen and is ready to go to other parts of the body BUT WHY???

HOW DOES THE HEART WORK? The structure of the heart allows oxygen-rich blood to remain separate from oxygen-poor blood: they are going to two different places!

WHAT MOVES YOUR BLOOD AROUND? Blood travels through blood vessels Arteries: Carrie blood full of oxygen and nutrients away from the heart Veins: Carry blood full of carbon dioxide into the heart

Arteries carry blood AWAY from the heart Veins carry blood TO the heart

WHAT MOVES YOUR BLOOD AROUND? Capillaries: Little blood vessels that carry blood between arteries and veins

WELCOME TO THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

CIRCLE CYCLE The circulatory system is the CYCLE that your blood takes around your body

Circulatory System – Delivers oxygen and other nutrients to the body’s cells

TWO FUNCTIONS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM TO PUMP OXYGEN-RICH BLOOD TO THE CELLS TO REMOVE CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE CELLS HOW?

Circulatory System Foldable

HEARTVEINS ARTERIES

HEARTVEINS ARTERIES -Pump made of cardiac muscle -Pumps oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the rest of the body -Pumps oxygen-poor blood from the rest of the body to the lungs -Tubes that carry blood -carry oxygen- poor blood FROM all parts of the body TO the heart -Tubes that carry blood -carry oxygen- rich blood FROM the lungs TO all parts of the body

Oxygenated Blood Deoxygenated Blood

VENN DIAGRAM

VEINS ARTERIES

What are the similarities and differences between…

ARTERIES TAKE BLOOD AWAY FROM THE HEART PUMPS OXYGEN-RICH BLOOD TO THE LUNGS TO THE REST OF THE BODY

VEINS TAKE BLOOD TO THE HEART DELIVERS OXYGEN- POOR BLOOD FROM THE BODY TO THE HEART

BOTH: Found all over the body Pumped by the heart Carry blood to and from the lungs

ARTERIES START AT THE HEART

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE HEART???

WARM UP: Get a sheet from the front DESK. You do not need to fill anything in. We will start with Heart notes today!

THE HEART: The heart is the central organ of the circulatory system. Its function is to pump blood around the body Every time the heart beats, it pushes blood through the blood vessels of the circulatory system.

WHAT DO YOU NOTICE ABOUT THIS DIAGRAM THAT SEEMS ODD?

WHY IS THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HEART LABELED AS THE RIGHT AND VICE VERSA???

THE PARTS OF THE HEART: The heart is separated into two sides  right and left The two halves are separated by the septum. Septum = a wall of tissue that separates the sides of the heart and keeps the oxygen-rich blood from mixing with the oxygen-poor blood Each side of the heart is also separated into two compartments. Top of each side = atrium Receives blood that comes into the heart Lower chamber of each side= ventricle pumps blood out of the heart Valve = flap of tissue that separates the atrium from the ventricle and prevents blood from flowing backwards and also between ventricles and blood vessels

HEART DIAGRAM & VIDEOS: man-body/circulatory-system.htm

The human heart is about the size of your fist!

FAST FACTS! The average heartbeat is 72 times per minute. In the course of one day it beats over 100,000 times. In one year the heart beats almost 38 million times, and by the time you are 70 years old, on average, it's made it to 2.5 billion beats.
