By Captain Chesley Sullenberger with Jeffrey Zaslow Presented by Traci Miller, Megan Comstock & Jenna Matthey Tuesday, October 12, 2010

 Military Leadership and Management  Knowledge + Skills = Success!  Aviate, Navigate, Communicate

 Born on January 23, 1951 in Grayson County, Texas  American airline transport pilot safety expert and accident investigator  Formerly US Airways Captain best known for Flight 1549  Now resides in California with his wife Lorrie and adopted daughters, Kate and Kelly

 Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1958  American journalist and a columnist for The Wall Street Journal.  His column “Moving On” focuses on life transitions and often attracts wide media interest  Author or coauthor of three bestselling books:  The Last Lecture (2008) with Randy Pausch  Highest Duty with Capt. Chesley Sullenberger (2009)  The Girl From Ames

 Throughout the book, Chesley Sullenberger uses numerous examples and stories to illustrate many of the same leadership themes. Specifically, he talks about the following:  Professionalism in management  Learning from others mistakes, being thankful  Rising to the occasion  Drawing on your knowledge and skill to create new and effective solutions  Recognizing that everyone is of value and necessary to create a successful result.

 Crash or Burns:  Times in the air until they hit the birds: 95 sec  Time it took from they hit the birds until they crashed: 3 minutes and 28 sec  Specifications of plane landing: angles, etc.  Chapters 8 & 9  Based off of Sully’s Military based leadership training  Book Display of MLM: “Doing What Is Right”

 To get promoted, must be a good politician  Must develop alliances and find well connected mentor  Importance of networking

 Strategic Leadership  BE-KNOW-DO  Influencing, Operating, Improving

 Crash or Burns:  How many people were in airplane accidents prior to Flight 1549: 2 people  How many passengers were on Flight 1549 (excluding crew): 150  How many people on that flight touched or looked at the safety procedures manual 12 of 150 people  Chapter 10  Optimism  “Climb to the Top”

 Chapter 13: Disaster has stuck- literally!  Leadership/management theme  Story  How it applies

 Leaders prepare for specific predicted outcomes.  Sully was an experienced & talented pilot had the positive expectation that he would never crash an airplane.  GOOD! And may have led to successful outcome based on theories…

 Pygmalion Leadership: Power of Positive Expectations  First captured by psychologist Robert Rosenthal in his study of elementary school children in 1992  Higher expected outcomes led to positive expectations lead to more positive individual & team outcomes  “Self-fulfilling prophecy”  Theory Y Management  Douglas McGregor of MIT in the 1960s “Theory X/Theory Y “ views of motivation  Positive view on the workplace and motivation:  Leader assumes employees are ambitious and self-motivated and exercise self-control  Believe that employees will learn to seek out and accept responsibility and to exercise self-control and self-direction in accomplishing objectives to which they are committed

After retiring from US Airways on March 3, 2010, Sully used his newly found fame as a national leader:  International speaker on airline safety  Helped to develop new protocols for airline safety.  Co-chairman of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles youth introduction-to-aviation.  Ranked 2 nd in TIME Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of  Testified before the U.S. House of Representative's Subcommittee on Aviation of the Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure on February 24, 2009, regarding the unethical cut of salaries and pensions of airline pilots.

 A few weeks after the crash, it was revealed that Sullenberger had lost a library book about professional ethics, Just Culture: Balancing Safety and Accountability, in the plane's cargo hold. When Sullenberger telephoned the library to notify them of the lost book, it waived the usual fees. New York City Mayor Bloomberg replaced the book when presenting Sullenberger with the Key to the City of New York

 Book filled with take home themes of leadership and heroism  Specifically, Sully’s military experience, optimism, and positive expectations led to the successful emergency landing of Flight 1549 and saved the lives of 155 passengers and crew. Questions?
