GIS Information Project! By: Travis Heaton & Tiffani Watson

GIS: what is it, what it’s used for, and who uses it A geographic information system. Handling maps, capturing, storing, checking, integrating, manipulating, analyzing, and displaying data related positions on the Earth’s surface. A huge number of industries and agencies.

Topographic Information Deals with the third dimensions by using contour lines to show elevation change on the surface of the Earth. Real life problems solved by GIS Land records, utilities, address maintenance/E-911, asset management, community planning, and public safety/health.

Issues and Problems that might be studied by GIS technology Issues may include: fish and wildlife declines, toxic chemicals, nutrient overloading, habitat loss, altered water flow, invasive species, and pathogen contamination. How can GIS technology and studies be used by conservation groups Bridges the gap between different sectors and acts as a tool to integrate, manage, analyze, and visually format data from multiple sources.

Applications of GIS are useful to scientists who study marine environments Traditional knowledge may be useful for new biological and ecological insights. Traditional knowledge for resource management is of great value. Traditional knowledge is often used for protected areas and for conservation education. Traditional knowledge may benefit development agencies in providing more realistic evaluations of environment, natural resources, and productive systems. Traditional knowledge is useful for environmental assessment.

What needs do coastal communities have for GIS studies? Through the use of GIS, researchers are able to model vulnerability to sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and other hazards so that decision makers have the necessary tools to protect communities and effectively manage coastal resources. Data about coastal and marine and species are gathered with GIS technology It may increase the capability of specialists concerned with endangered species issues.

GPS: what is it, how is GPS technology used for GIS The uses of GIS to improve agriculture GIS can improve our understanding of framing areas, help promote agricultural development and assist in identifying and handling issues important to strengthening farming. GPS: what is it, how is GPS technology used for GIS A global positioning system. The primary focus of GPS within the GIS arena has traditionally been based around GPS systems that collect, store and transfer data from a field system to an office-based GIS.
