The use of technology in Geography

GIS – Geographic information systems “A GIS is a computer system capable of capturing, storing, analyzing, and displaying geographically referenced information” http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/gis_poster/ GIS’ can analyze multiple types of geographic information at the same time.

Examples of GIS

“It is possible to combine agricultural records with hydrography data to determine which streams will carry certain levels of fertilizer runoff.” http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/gis_poster/ http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/gis_poster/ The GIS can be used to predict the amount of runoff in the stream. GIS’ can be used to produce graphics to show the analysis of information for people who make decisions about resources.

GPS – Global Positioning system

How does GPS work? THREE PARTS There are 24 satellites in space that orbit the earth. Users can hold receivers in their hands or mount in their cars.
