The Key system in the fifth grade is designed to reward students for all the hard work they put in during the school year. The keys students earn are on display in the classroom throughout the year. Encourage your child to earn these keys! At the end of the year each student’s keys are tallied and they are presented with a gold key or a silver key during the last Blue and Gold Assembly

To receive a Gold Key a student needs 40 keys. To receive a Silver Key a student needs 25 keys Ways to earn a key: –Community Service –Patrols –SGA –Chorus/Instrumental Music concert attendance –Grades ‘A’ on a Math or Science Unit test and a 100% on Spelling/Vocab –School Clubs

Students can also work towards keys by collecting star punches. Every ‘A’ earned receives one star punch. Every 100% earned receives two star punches A student will earn a key once they receive 10 star punches

Our Academic Goals include: –Becoming an independent learner –Preparing for the secondary learning model which begins in Middle School

Students are expected to read 30 minutes each night. Please review and sign the THR (Take Home Reading Log) regularly Ways parents can be involved with their child’s reading –Parents can read to their children –Discuss what your child has read with them –Listen to your child read aloud

MCPS has a set a reading goal for each fifth grader to read 25 books for the school year.

The math curriculum is very rigorous. –It is important for students to keep up with homework and take good notes in class. –It is also important for students to ask questions when they don’t understand.
