Presentation transcript:

 Introductions  Charge from President Blake  Timeline  Structure  Outcomes

 1. Understand the context/parameters of state university as it relates to: › American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) › University System of Georgia Board of Regents › Southern Association of Colleges- Commission on Colleges › October 23 rd - State of Union on Universities

 2. Analyze MGA mission statement  3. Establish workgroups › Communication/web presence › Writing Team › Feedback Teams  4. Develop a multi-meeting structure utilizing technology

 National organization of 400 public colleges and universities  What does this mean to be an AASCU member? › We are institutions of access and opportunity › We are student-centered › We are “stewards of place”- we engage faculty, staff, and students in communities and regions we serve › (AASCU, Delivering America’s Promise)

 “Our institutional success is inextricably linked to the success of our communities, and our communities are the living classrooms and laboratories where our students and faculty learn”

 Institutions that position themselves as stewards of place should do well because they are deeply connected to specific places or regions and have strong connections to employers and communities and are seen as places that provide support and opportunity for students who may not fare so well in larger, anonymous settings.

 The road to success will be in strengthening their role as deeply engaged local partners with businesses, K-12, governmental agencies, social services, and community organizations

 Is achieved through the collective missions of our state’s public colleges and universities.  The role of public higher education in Georgia is to drive economic development and produce more educated individuals to contribute to the quality of life in the state. USG institutions are responsible for producing graduates with the requisite skills and knowledge to ensure  Georgia’s strong future in the knowledge-based and global economy. The individual mission and function of the institutions within the USG must be aligned with the overall USG mission in order to strategically meet the higher education needs of the State.

 Institutions included in the state universities sector offer a number of undergraduate and master’s-level programs, but very few doctoral programs.  Associate-level degrees can be offered at these universities, but they are also typically limited.  While teaching is a core focus at all USG institutions, the emphasis on research activity at these state universities includes some basic research, but is typically more focused on institutional and/or applied research. Board of Regents Policy Manual 2.10 Institutional Mission

 Vision- We transform individuals and their communities through extraordinary learning.  Values › Stewardship › Engagement › Adaptability › Learning

 “A mission statement defines the overall purpose of an organization. The mission should state what you do, for whom do you do it, and the benefit.” (Michael Wilkinson, 2011 Executive Guide to Facilitating Strategy)

 The mission of Middle Georgia State College is to serve the educational needs of a diverse population through high quality programs connected to community needs in a global context and to serve as a leader for the intellectual, economic, and cultural life of the region.

 Quality Check › Does the mission statement broadly describe what we do, for whom we do it, and the benefit? › Does the mission statement indicate the market that we serve? › Does the mission statement contain enough specificity to distinguish our organization/ institution mission for that of other higher education institutions? › Does this define who we are today and who we want to be in the future? › Can you easily communicate to multiple stakeholders quickly and from memory?

 State of the Union of Higher Education  Use “Drivers Model” to Develop Mission Statement › State of Middle GA College › Identification of key trends that will affect our success in the future (October 9 and 23 rd ) › Identification of key components of the MGA’s mission statement › Answer the following questions- › 1. What do we do? › 2. For whom do we do it? › 3. What’s the benefit?  Draft mission statement- Small working groups (utilizing technology) - Due Date November 3rd
