Environmental Research across Construction and the Built Environment Dr. Mike Hammond MCIOB, CEnv. Research Manager

SummitSkills’ Research Since 2006 SummitSkills’ Research has produced Labour Market Information for the Building Services Engineering sector on a range of issues, from the impact of the recession, to the training needs for environmental technologies. All research is carried out in house by a dedicated team of professionals highly qualified in both the research and construction sector. We are now expanding our offer to the whole of the Construction and Built Environment, offering our services to a range of clients in both the public and private sectors.

SummitSkills’ Research

SummitSkills’ Research: Recent Environmental Publications

SummitSkills’ Research Stage 1: Potential Training Demand in Environmental Technologies in Building Services Engineering - Trend Analysis and Indicative Training Needs Analysis Stage 2: Potential Training Demand in Environmental Technologies in Building Services Engineering - Indicative Training Needs Analysis Using a Scenario-Based Approach Stage 3: Potential Training Demand in Environmental Technologies in Building Services Engineering - Demand and Supply Side Gap analysis

SummitSkills’ Research: Forthcoming Publications Environmental Technologies in the Building Services Engineering Sector - A Four Year Trend Analysis This report looks at the performance of the main environmental technologies within the BSE sector between to identify growth trends or decline in interest in the sector in these technologies. The percentage engagement in installation by the sector is examined, along with the intention to engage and the percentage of companies claiming that their operatives have received training in these technologies.

So, this is the engagement by the BSE sector in the installation of Air Source Heat Pumps by industry

This diagram shows the percentage of companies in the BSE sector engaging in the installation of Biomass by English region

This diagram shows the percentage of BSE companies in the South West that claim their operatives have received some kind of formal training in Rainwater Harvesting

SummitSkills’ Research How can you get hold of this research? 1. It will be available to purchase from the National Skills Academy for Environmental Technologies (NSAET) shortly. or 2.SummitSkills is looking for strategic partners that have obtained funding for environmental projects, to develop this work further and roll it out across the Construction and Built Environment.

SummitSkills’ Research – projects in progress “What has happened to the environmental technologies market?” An analysis of why the mass market envisaged for environmental technologies and installed by the Building Services Engineering sector has failed to materialise in the way that was expected by Government. An investigation into the training providers that employers who install environmental technologies are using to train their operatives, and the reasons why. The project looks at FITs, RHI and the Green Deal to identify the impact these incentives are having (or not) on the BSE sector.

SummitSkills’ Research The Project is in two phases: Phase 1: Online questionnaire sent to 4, 449 companies on the SummitSkills database that are in the BSE footprint. Analysis of data and compilation of a short key issues interim report currently being done. Funding was received from the National Skills Academy for Environmental Technologies. Phase 2: 475 in-depth semi-structured interviews of employers in the BSE sector. Publication of a full report of both phases. Funding is being secured…but...

SummitSkills’ Research “The impact of a full fabric solution to obtain code 5 and code 6 housing on the skill requirements of the BSE sector.” The creation by UK house builders of a capability to produce code 5 and code 6 houses has implications for the BSE sector in relation to, for example, the maintenance of ‘air- tightness’. This report seeks to identify the skills that BSE operatives need to develop to facilitate the ‘mass production’ of these new houses in the future. An application to fund this project has been made to a funder...but if you are interested in expanding the project (i.e. looking at the skills needs of the brick layers/ carpenters etc) or localising this work please contact us as soon as possible.

SummitSkills’ Research Greening the BSE sector: An assessment of the number of ‘Green Jobs’ likely to be created in the BSE sector. This project looks at the potential uplift in demand for skilled labour as a result of increased demand for environmental technologies in the BSE sector. The project seeks to give a realistic assessment of the number of jobs created in the BSE sector as a result of the increased demand for environmental technologies. An application has been made to a funder for this project, but…

SummitSkills’ Research “An analysis of the skill needs for the Construction and Built Environment sector in ‘retro-fitting’ the existing housing stock for increased carbon efficiency” Another potential project being prepared to seek funding. If you are interested in funding/partnering in this project, please contact us.

SummitSkills’ Research We can tailor both existing and new projects to your geographical needs. We can produce Labour Market Information at Sub-Regional Level, even down to Metropolitan Borough level in some cases for the BSE sector, or indeed the Built Environment generally. We are looking for partners and funders for our work across the UK, so if you would like to work with us, or just find out more, please take a leaflet or contact us.

SummitSkills’ Research Thanks for listening Have you any questions?
