WFL (Wilburn Football League) Football 101

Table of Contents What is Football? –History and ETHS Legends What is the WFL? –Basic Rules and terminology –Positions and responsibilities –Formations The Second Annual WFL Draft (already completed) The Draft and Stat-keeping

What is Football? History –Derived from the English game of rugby, American football was started in 1879 with rules instituted by Walter Camp, player and coach at Yale University. –Two-hand touch football is a sport played between two teams of typically 6 to 7 players with the objective of scoring points by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone. The ball can be advanced by running with it or throwing it to a teammate.

What is Football? Basic Terminology Line of scrimmage —the imaginary line where the football is placed. Down—one to four “chances” a team is allowed to earn four additional chances. Another set of chances/downs is earned by progressing the football down field 10 or more yards (large steps). Touchdown—when a player crosses the goal line with possession of the football. Huddle—a brief team gathering, usually in a tight circle, to strategize before each play.

Line of Scrimmage The imaginary line where the football is placed

Downs or “Chances”

Huddling The offensive team's huddle is almost always led by the quarterback. The huddle will always end with the quarterback saying “ready”…then everyone shouting “break” clapping simultaneously. (Let’s Practice)

The Huddle (6 volunteers)

Huddling Rules (Standing) facing away from the line of scrimmage, the (1) center is in the middle; (2) tackles are next to the center; the (1) running back is next to the tackles; the (2) wide receivers are next to the running backs. All positions are standing facing the quarterback (me). Mini “round-up” position. Each team has 30 seconds to (1) huddle, (2) choose a play from their playbooks, and (3) snap the ball. The defensive team must count— loudly! If a team fails to snap the ball before the thirty- second count, a down or chance is lost.
