Football Made Easy UNDERSTANDING THE GAME

Offensive Player Positions  Center (C): first person to touch the ball and he snaps to the Quarterback (QB); blocks for the QB  Fullback (F): blocks for the Running Back (RB), protects the QB and can be used to run the ball for short yardage  Left and Right Guards (LG/RG): line up on either side of the Center; protect QB and ball carriers  Left and Right Tackles (LT/RT): line up on either side of the LG/RG; blocking  Quarterback (QB): leader of the team; he calls the plays, hands the ball off to the RB, throws to a receiver or keeps it and runs it himself  Running Back (RB): runs the ball or receives a pass out of the backfield

 Tight End (TE): can be used as a receiver but also blocks  Wide Receiver (WR): typically a fast athlete; runs "pass routes" in order to be "open" to catch the ball

Defensive Player Positions  Cornerback (CB): line up directly across from the WR to defend all passes, they can make tackles as well  Defensive Linemen (also known as Defensive Tackle (DT)/Defensive End (DE)): line up across from the opponent's offensive linemen; explode off the line to tackle RBs and/or the QB and keep the other team from scoring  Linebacker (LB): line up behind the defensive line, generally the best tacklers, they tackle RBs and/or the QB but may cover short passes as well  Safety (S): line up behind the Linebackers; the last line of defense they must defend the pass and run

Need To Know Terms  Offense: the team in possession of the ball  Defense: the team working to stop their opponent from scoring  Backfield: a group of offensive players, QB and RBs, who line up behind the line of scrimmage  Down: an offensive series that either leads to a 1st Down or punt  End Zone: the area at each end of the field where touchdowns are scored when players carry or catch the ball here; the end zone measures 10 yards long  Extra Point: a kick through the goal posts following a touchdown good for 1 point

 Fair Catch: when a player returning a punt waves his arm over his head side to side; this player can't advance the ball and no one can touch him  Field Goal: kick through the goal posts worth 3 points done usually within 40 yards of the goal post  Fumble: when the offensive player with the ball loses possession/drops the ball while running, getting tackled or on a bad snap, etc.  Huddle: when the 11 players in the field come together to discuss strategy  Incompletion: when the QB throws a pass and it is dropped or caught out of bounds  Interception: when the QB throws a pass and it is caught by a defensive strategy

 Kickoff: when the ball is kicked to the opposing team to get things started at the beginning of the game, beginning of second half, or after each touchdown  Line of Scrimmage: an imaginary line that extends from where the ball is placed at the end of a play to both sidelines  Punt: a drop kick made by the offense if they fail to make a 1st down in three downs; 4th down plays  Red Zone: unofficial area from the opponents 20 yard line to the goal line  Sack: when a defensive player tackles the QB behind the line of scrimmage  Safety: 2 point score that the defense earns when they tackle an offensive player in their own end zone

The Game  First Half: 2 Quarters @12 mins each  Halftime: 15 mins  Second Half: 2 Quarters @12 mins each  Overtime (if tied at the end of 4th quarter); High School/College: 4 downs to score

The Objective  Score more points than the other team during the allotted time.  4 tries ( downs ) to advance at least 10 yards, and can score points once they reach or near the opposite end of the field, called the end zone. If the offense succeeds in advancing at least 10 yards, they earn a "first down" and the number of tries allotted is reset and they are again given 4 tries to advance an additional 10 yards, starting from the spot to which they last advanced. If the offense does not advance at least 10 yards during their 4 downs, the team without the ball (the defense ) regains control of the ball (called turnover on downs).end zoneturnover on downs  Points are scored by advancing the ball into the opponent's end zone for a touchdown (worth six points), or by kicking the ball from the playing field through the raised vertical posts in the back of that end zone for a field goal (worth three points).touchdownfield goal  After scoring a touchdown, the offense is given one additional play from the 2-yard line (3-yard line in amateur football) to attempt to score (in the NFL, 15-yard line on 1-point conversions). These attempts are termed point after touchdown (PAT) and are used to score 1 or 2 points as follows:point after touchdown  The offense may attempt a field goal kick which is worth 1 point.  The offense may attempt to re-advance the ball into the opponent's end zone for a two-point conversion worth 2 points.  While the opposing team has possession, the defense attempts to prevent the offense from advancing the ball and scoring. If an offensive player loses the ball during play (a fumble) or the ball is caught by a defensive player while still in the air (an interception ), the defense may attempt to run into the offense's end zone for a touchdown. The defense may also score points by tackling the ball carrier in the offense's own end zone, called a safety (which is worth two points).fumblesafety
