What is the IAB? The Industry Advisory Board (IAB) is a group of volunteer leaders dedicated to: –Serving as a “voice of industry” to IIE’s leadership and the academic community –Enhancing IIE’s image, relevance and value proposition to industrial engineers working in industry –Increasing the awareness and knowledge of the industrial engineering profession and the tremendous value it provides society –Increasing the engagement of IIE’s industry membership (~7k) –Supporting the professional development and career growth of industry members You can succeed best and quickest by helping others succeed…

Professional Networking Exercise –~10 minutes –Introduce yourself to 2 people in the room you already don’t know –Give them your 1-2 minute quick intro (elevator pitch) including: 1.Name 2.Organization (company or school) 3.Job, role or area of focus /interest 4.How you are involved/plugged into IIE (IAB, Division, Chapter, Session Presenter, Committee, etc.) 5.Most fun / interesting experience to date at the conference

Industry Advisory Board 2014 You-Tube Initiative Update Facilitated by Kaz Takeda IIE Industry Advisory Board Past Chair Manager of Industrial Engineering at Disneyland Resort

IAB YouTube Initiative Started in 2009 Initiative Objectives: –Promote our profession to high school students, teachers and guidance counselors –Encourage freshmen enrollment into Industrial Engineering university programs –Increase the engagement of IIE University Chapters How its done: –Coordinated by IAB YouTube Contest Committee –IIE University Chapters are challenged to create a YouTube video presentation that inform and excites high school students about Industrial Engineering –All submissions are reviewed and judged –Winners are announced at the Annual Conference 8

IAB YouTube Initiative Prize funds were raised by donation's from IAB membership and various Professional IIE Chapters which totals nearly $10,000 –Professional Chapters: Puget Sound, Twin Cities, Wichita, Los Angeles, National, Lancaster/Harrisburg, Greater Kansas City –Individual Members: Steve S., Gwen C., John H., Deb L., Dennis O., John C., Tom M., others Since University of San Diego won the initial contest in 2010, there have been 35+ entries and 82,000+ views. Other universities placed include: 2014: Oregon State, U of Washington, U Panamericana, IIE ESPOL 2013: Kansas State, Cal Poly SLO, NC State, U of Panamericana, U of Missouri 2012: Cal Poly SLO, U of Miami, Cal State East Bay, S. Poly State University, Oregon State 2011: Cal Poly SLO, Wichita State, U of Tennessee-Knoxville Feedback from numerous university advisors have told us that it is now common to have 1 st year students say they selected IE as a major after finding these YouTube videos 9

IAB Recognition & Awards Committee The IAB group has been encouraging our IAB members to nominate co-workers for IIE Industry-related Awards Several Industry-related Awards were identified, and some easy to follow instructions with key deadlines, were sent out several times during the year The IAB group was very successful this year in increasing the number of Award Nominations from Industry Need to continue with the IAB next year and expand it to others in Industry (using IIE interest groups & other Industry sources)

Where we’re looking to go? The Industry Advisory Board (IAB) is a group of volunteer leaders dedicated to: –S–Serving as a “voice of industry” to IIE’s leadership and the academic community –E–Enhancing IIE’s image, relevance and value proposition to industrial engineers working in industry –I–Increasing the awareness and knowledge of the industrial engineering profession and the tremendous value it provides society –I–Increasing the engagement of IIE’s industry membership (~7k) –S–Supporting the professional development and career growth of industry members You can succeed best and quickest by helping others succeed…

Where we’re looking to go? STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, Math The US is losing its competitive advantage in math and science while the rest of the world continues to pull ahead. Our knowledge capital, which fuels innovation and economic growth, is at risk.* Two major problems are contributing to a U.S. STEM crisis: 1. Lack of student engagement in STEM subjects 2. Shortage of qualified STEM teachers US is ranked 27 th out of 29 for the rate of STEM degrees awarded in developed countries** * **

Where we’re looking to go?

How can we change the tide? What specifically can we do? Young Students Engagement among students at all levels Educate middle school and junior high school students Make STEM attractive to young students –Career days –Junior Achievement –Take your child to work day High School Students Promote careers in engineering Source the IIE website Mentor students College Students Work with and encourage existing IE students Provide internships Summer employment Attend chapter mixers Guest speaking at Universities On-campus information sessions Mentor
