American History – Unit 1

Jamestown Timeline  1585 – 1 st Colony at Roanoke soon ends in failure  1590 – Remains of second failed Roanoke colony found  1607 – Colony at Jamestown founded

Jamestown Timeline  – Jamestown suffers the “Starving Time”  1613 – First shipment of Virginia tobacco sent to England  1619 – House of Burgesses first meets in Virginia

Jamestown Timeline  1640 – Tobacco shipments reach 3 million pounds per year  Bacon’s Rebellion attacks colonial government  Bacon was in a dispute that led to some battles with Indians. When he found out some friendly Indians that he had attacked were supplied by the local government, he and his supporters attacked and burned Jamestown for three months. This was an example of the dissatisfaction the colonist had with the government.

King Phillip’s War ( )  In New England, near Plymouth, there were problems between English settler’s and Indians led by Metacom (called Prince Phillip by English). Some of the bloodiest battles ensued before the defeat of Metacom.
