SETTING Islam arose in the Arabian Peninsula and became one the world’s major religion The Arabian Peninsula is part of Southwestern Asia and is surrounded by water on all four sides. It is mostly dessert, but farming is possible through irrigation and scattered oasis There were many trade routes that linked Arabian Peninsula to Asia and Africa

SETTING CONTINUED… Mecca was one of the major cities and trading centers. It was also a major pilgrimage center, where Arabs went to pray at the Kaaba.

STOP AND THINK 1. Why was Mecca a good place for the spread of Ideas?

The Arabian Peninsula’s dessert life helped shape Muhammad’s early life Born Mecca about 570, he worked as a shepherd among the Bedouins He led successful caravan across the dessert and became a successful merchant At 25 he married Khadija, a wealthy widow MUHAMMAD’S EARLY LIFE

Before Muhammad’s time Arabs were worshipping many different Idols. Muhammad was troubled by the idol worship and many other problems in Mecca. MUHAMMAD'S EARLY LIFE CONT.

MUHAMMAD’S VISION When he was 40, he went to a cave to meditate. According to Muslim belief, while he was meditating, he heard a voice saying “Recite in the name of your God, the creator, who created man from clots of blood.”

Muhammad believed that this was the voice from Angel Gabriel calling him to be the messenger of Allah. MUHAMMAD’S VISION CONT.

At first few people listened to the teachings of Muhammad He was later accepted by many and was able to spread the teachings As he gained followers, the religion of Islam was born Islam means: Submission to Allah MUHAMMAD BEGINS TO TEACH

BUT NOT EVERYONE LIKED MUHAMMAD… STOP AND THINK… 1. WHY WOULD PEOPLE DISLIKE MUHAMMAD’S IDEAS?

THE HIJRA: A TURNING POINT Many threatened to murder Muhammad, so Muhammad and his followers left Mecca to Yathrib ( Medina). This journey is known as the hijra. The hijra was a turning point for Islam because in Medina, Muhammad was welcomed by Muslims as law giver and God’s prophet. In 630, Muhammad returned to Mecca and defeated those who opposed him.

STOP AND THINK 1.How would you respond if you heard someone was teaching about a new religion? 2.What struggles do you think Muhammad faced in spreading the religion of Islam?

USING THE PEE METHOD IN CONTEXT Now write your own using our content from today- Choose ONE of the prompts below to complete the PEE method for.
