construct  con - struct  If you construct something, you build it or put it together.  People native to the Artic regions used to construct shelters from snow and ice.  The Boy Scouts used wood, nails, a saw, and a hammer to construct birdhouses.

sidekick  side - kick  If you have a sidekick, you have a good friend and partner.  Those two kids are always together; they are real sidekicks.  Sue and her sidekick Anne are working on that puzzle.

unique  u – ni – que  Something that is unique is the only one like it.  Tom’s grandmother made him a unique teddy bear when he was a baby.  You can write a unique story.

Long e: e, ee, ea, y  creme Steve  When you see e-consonant-e, the first e, says its name, and the second e is silent. (When 2 vowels go walking, the first does the talking, and the second one stays quiet.)  Today we will study other spellings for long e.

 easel  CVCe – When a word has a vowel-consonant-silent e pattern, the vowel usually stands for its long vowel.  these  scene  Steve  CV, CV/C – When a single vowel ends a word or a syllable, it usually has the long sound.  be  me  secret  Two ee’s usually stand for the long e sound.  tree  green  sleep  When y ends a word of two or more syllables, it usually has the long e sound.  bunny  city  pretty  CVVC – When two vowels appear together in a word or syllable, the first usually stands for its long sound and the second is silent.  leaf  scream  please

Long e: e, ee, ea, y  easel  The sound you hear at the beginning of easel is long e.  Sometimes ea stands for long e.  peak  be  week  baby

Long e: e, ee, ea, y  relax  You can blend longer words with /e/ by dividing them into smaller chunks or syllables.  When a word has a long vowel sound in the first syllable, we usually divide the word between the vowel and the consonant that follows it.  Read one syllable at a time and then blend them together.

contraption  con – trap – tion  A contraption is something that is put together in a very odd way.  The strange machines the farmers made to catch the mice were contraptions.  My dad put two baby buggies together to make a contraption the twins could ride in.  The coach made a contraption to wheel all the balls and other stuff in.

foolproof  fool - proof  Something that is foolproof is so simple and safe that anybody can use it.  A cat is a foolproof mouse catcher.  The most foolproof bike is a tricycle.

daydream  day – dream  When you daydream, you are awake but you are thinking of pleasant things.  On that cold winter day, I daydreamed about going to the beach.  Susan daydreamed about how nice it would be to have her own room.

Speaking & Listening: Solve Problems  You can use speaking and listening skills to help you solve problems.  For example, you could discuss difficulties that may come up when friends work on a project together.  You would focus your discussion on three areas:  Identify the problem  Offer ideas for a solution and listen to the ideas and opinions of others.  Create a solution.

Speaking & Listening: Solve Problems  When you work on group problem solving, you should have a discussion leader.  A good discussion leader calls on people in turn who raise their hands.  A good discussion leader listens carefully and does not interrupt.  A good discussion leader helps keep the conversation focused on the topic.
