Chondrosarcoma Previous Page Next page

Chondrosarcoma Previous Page Next page Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor characterized by the formation of cartilage, but not bone, by the tumor cells. Frequency in jaws : Rare Previous Page Next page

Chondrosarcoma Cinical Features Previous Page Next page Age : Extragnathic : adulthold (6th and 7th decades) Gnatic (Jaw) : 7th decade (mean age : 41.6) Gender : Men = Femal Site : Maxila > Mandible Sign : Most common : A painless mass or swelling Separation or loosening of teeth Pain : Unusual complaint (In contrast to osteosarcoma ) Previous Page Next page

Chondrosarcoma Radiographic features Previous Page Next page Radiography : Radiolucent process with poorly defined borders Often contains scattered and variable amounts of radiopaque foci Some : Densely calcified mass with irregular peripheral margins sunburst pattern (similar to that seen in some osteosarcomas) Root resorption or symmetrical widening of the periodontal ligament space Previous Page Next page

Chondrosarcoma کانون رادیواپک Previous Page Next page

Chondrosarcoma Histopathologic Features Previous Page Next page Composed of cartilage showing varying degrees of maturation and cellularity. Typical lacunar formation within the chondroid matrix: In most cases (scarce in poorly differentiated tumors ) Often a lobular growth pattern Lobules : Central areas : Greatest degree of maturation Peripheral areas : Immature cartilage and mesenchymal tissue consisting of round or spindle-shaped cells Calcification or ossification may occur Previous Page Next page

Chondrosarcoma Grades Previous Page Next page Divided into three histo pathologic grades : Grade I chondrosarcomas : closely mimic the appear ance of a chondroma, composed of chondroid matrix and chondroblasts that show only subtle variation from the appearance of normal cartilage. a tumor should be considered malignant when large, plump chondroblasts and binucleated chondro cytes are present Calcification or ossification of the cartilaginous matrix : often prominent mitoses : rare. Grade II chondrosarcomas : greater pro portion of moderately sized nuclei and increased cellularity, particularly about the periphery of the lobules. The mitotic rate : low . Grade III chondrosarcomas : highly cellular and may show a prominent spindle cell proliferation. Mitoses : prominent. Cells within lacunae : scarce. Chondrosarcomas of the jaws : predominantly of the histopathologic grades I and II Previous Page Next page
