Engineering 1182 College of Engineering Engineering Education Innovation Center Feature-Based Modeling Part Editing Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling1

Engineering 1182 Feature-Based Modeling Break down into Features Series of Steps 1 st Step: Base Feature Adding / Subtracting Material Edge Features Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling2

Engineering 1182 Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling3 Objects can be thought of in terms of features Shapes Holes Rounds Etc. Determines design strategy Breaking it Down into Features Feature Modeling Example

Engineering 1182 Example Construction 1 Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling4 We can think of the block in terms of 2 “L” shapes and then cut out the hole

Engineering 1182 Example Construction 2 Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling5 We can think of the block in terms of a “C” shape and then add the plank with a hole

Engineering 1182 Example Construction 3 Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling6 Finally, we could draw the overall shape from the top view and remove unwanted material

Engineering 1182 Series of Steps Base Feature First Extrusion or Revolve Reduce Steps of Construction Features Additions or subtractions from original base feature Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling7

Engineering 1182 Fillets create rounded edges Chamfers create slanted edges Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling8 Edge Features

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks Example: Piston Head Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling9 How would you break this down into features? Where would you start? How would you break this down into features? Where would you start?

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Base Feature Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling10 There are a couple ways to effectively model this piston head but for these slides we will start with a simple extrusion of a circle to create a cylinder

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Extruded Cut Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling11 The volume will be removed using an extruded cut offset from the top surface

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Revolved Cut Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling12 The piston rings will be cut out using a revolved cut

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Review Design Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling13 Is there any other way that we could have reached this point and how many steps would it have involved? Would it be easier?

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Extruded Cut Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling14 The pin hole and groove will be removed using an extruded cut

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Chamfer Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling15 The top slanted edge will be added using a chamfer

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Fillet Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling16 And finally the bottom edge of the head will be smoothed out using a Fillet (under the features menu)

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Finished Part Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling17 This finished product can now be used in an assembly with other components shown here

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Design Tree Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling18 The design tree on the left of the screen catalogs all the steps of creating this part and records the steps from top to bottom Sketches are absorbed into features but can be accessed by clicking the plus sign next to each feature

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Part Editing Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling19 The design tree can be “rolled back” by clicking and dragging the blue bar at the bottom up and the features are no longer shown New features can be added to this model in the middle of the design tree while other items are still “rolled back”

Engineering 1182 SolidWorks: Altered Final Part Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling20 These changes will also carry over to the assembly that contains the part When the design tree is restored then all the features return as long as changes do not interfere with previous features

Engineering 1182 Feature Based Modeling Wrap Up Recognize Features of Object Start with Base Feature Add or Remove Material in a series of steps Features to add last: –Fillets: Rounded edges –Chamfers: Slanted edges Editing Features with Model Tree Homework Problem 6.4 (nn) Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling21

Engineering 1182 In-Class Problems Rev: , AJPFeature Based Modeling22 Create the following shape according to the features and dimensions. (Hint: Add Fillets last) Create the following shape according to the features and dimensions. (Hint: Add Fillets last) Problem 6.4 (p) & (u)
