Solid Modeling SolidWorks Layout ENGR 1182 SolidWorks 01

Mechanical and Aerospace engineers need solid models of jet engine components and assemblies to do analysis on for component strength under high stresses and temperatures. This method of analyzing components for strength is called finite element analysis and is growing more popular in industry as a tool for predicting part viability. Solid Modeling In The Real World

Today’s Objectives  Introduction to: Layout of SolidWorks  Starting SolidWorks  Part File Layout 2D Sketching  SW01 Activity  View Block  First 2D Profile  SW01 Application

Before Using SolidWorks it is Recommended that you Change the Icons Color 4 Click to return to TOC 1.Select Tools/Options/System Options/Colors 2.Under Icon color, change the option from Default to Classic 3.To change Icons as shown below:

SolidWorks Layout – An Introduction (At the end of this lesson you should be able to manipulate an already constructed SolidWorks Object and you are NOT expected to be able to create the object.). Note that there is a lot of detailed information in the following slides so you might want copy this material for later reference. ENGR 1182 SolidWorks 01

SolidWorks Layout  Starting SolidWorks Three Main Options Part File Layout Tool Ribbon 3D Part Creation Model Tree View Options Mouse Options

Starting SolidWorks Selecting File/New will bring up the following dialog box Also notice the Tutorials icon for extra help learning SolidWorks

SolidWorks Part File Layout Tool bar ribbon Model Tree View Options

SolidWorks Part File Layout Status Bar Units Control Information Line

SolidWorks Tool Ribbon Two most commonly used tabs: Features and Sketch Note these 2 commonly used drawing tools: 1) Line 2) Circle

Making an Object in SolidWorks 1.Draw a SKETCH using the 2D Drawing Tools 2.Operate on that Sketch using a Feature like Extrude Boss/Base or Extrude Cut or Revolve Boss/Base or Revolved Cut 3.Repeat Step 1 & 2 as required

SolidWorks 3D Part Creation The tool ribbon shows the tools available for creating 3D parts from 2D sketches

SolidWorks Model Tree The left hand side of your SolidWorks menu is known as the Model Tree In a new part file it only shows the original 3 reference planes and the origin Note that these items can be hidden by using “Cleaning up the Model Tree Display “ found in the “SolidWorks_Settings_and_Helpful_ Hints” document.Cleaning up the Model Tree Display

SolidWorks Model Tree Notice that the sketches are no longer shown once used for a feature but can be accessed by clicking the plus sign next to that feature The Model Tree keeps track of the model creation by showing the sketches or features used in order from top to bottom

SolidWorks Viewing Options Front Top Bottom RightLeftBack In the top middle of the workspace there is a view menu “Normal to” view option orients to a selected plane or surface Viewing Option Layout

SolidWorks Display Options The other icons control zoom, section views, display type and other advanced options Shadows and RealView Graphics (reflections) should be turned off before printing assignments

SolidWorks View Selector Cube The View Cube allows the user to see and select model views.

The View can also be changed by using the Hot Keys as follows: Isometric View Select FRONT Select Ctrl+8 TO GET FRONT VIEW Select Ctrl+7 to get ISO view Hit Esc to restore image

Changing An Object’s Orientation z yx w The VIEW OPTIONS described earlier demonstrated how to re-orient your part to any of the “head on” views or to a single Isometric View, but if you wanted to view the part below in an Isometric View from the Y corner you need to perform a different operation! This part is an Isometric View from the X corner ( The green face is in the Front View) To create an Isometric from the Y corner we need to place the blue face in the Front View

Changing An Object’s Orientation Left Click on BLUE Face Select Ctrl + F8 to get “Head On” View To produce this image Right Click on Part, then select Zoom/Pan/Rotate and finally View Orientation

Changing An Object’s Orientation Select Update Standard Views And then select the Front View Click on Yes Click on X box to remove image Select Ctrl + F7 to get NEW Isometric View

The 2 cd option is the Mouse Wheel SolidWorks Mouse Buttons Rotate wheel to zoom in/out on cursor Push down and hold the wheel and then move the mouse to rotate objects in 3 dimensions Right Click and Select a View is a Selection Tool

Let’s Make a Simple Object (This is to illustrate the procedure you will learn in later lessons on SolidWorks and you are not responsible for being able to perform these construction steps) Sketch Rectangle Extrude Boss/Base Extrude Cut Boss/Base Sketch Triangle Sketch Profile Revolved Boss/Base But you might want to use this information to investigate building objects in SolidWorks to help you visualize some of the more difficult Graphics images. Your Instructor will be happy assist you in this optional work.

Let’s Make a Simple Object - Results (This is to illustrate the procedure you will learn in later lessons on SolidWorks and you are not responsible for being able to perform these construction steps) SolidWorks Part *.SLDPRT Sketch Rectangle (on FRONT PLANE) Sketch Triangle (on FRONT SURFACE) Sketch Profile (on FRONT PLANE) SolidWorks Drawing *.SLDDRW

SolidWorks Images in Graphics Lectures to Aid in Improving Student Visualization Skills Coded Plans - SOLIDWORKS Part, Drawing & PDF available If you see a picture like this in a Graphics Lecture, it indicates that there is a SolidWorks file available in Carmen in a ZIP file After you download and UNZIP the ZIP file and look in the created folder you will see something similar the this After opening the INDEX word document, you can hold the keyboard Cntrl key down and select “Click Here to open” to access any of the supplied files Or you can select any of the supplied files directly by double left clicking on the file name under the folder but using the INDEX file is usually easier since you chose the file by recognizing the picture

SolidWorks Layout Wrap Up Starting Solidworks 1.Part 2.Assembly 3.Drawing Part Layout 1.Tool Ribbon  Features and Sketch 2.Model Tree 3.View Options  “Normal To” 4.Mouse Shortcuts Application SW01: Modeling - SOLIDWORKS Part available

SolidWorks Layout Practice Open this file in SolidWorks and familiarize yourself with the view options as well as zooming in and out. Also become familiar with navigating with the middle mouse button Modeling - SOLIDWORKS Part available

Important Takeaways  Layout of SolidWorks Tool Ribbon Model Tree View Options  2D Sketching Basic and Advanced Tools  The assignment from todays class is to complete the Application SW01. In the future most class sessions will be have an Activity (SW0X) and an Application (SW0X). Modeling - SOLIDWORKS Part available

What’s Next?  Due Next Class: SW01 Out of Class HW  Before next class read your assigned material
