Crimes Committed Arrested and charged with 52 counts of sexual abuse of young boys over 15 year period (2011) November: 40 counts of sex crimes against young boys, 7 counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, 8 counts of corruption of minors, 8 counts of endangering welfare of child, 7 counts of indecent assault, etc. December: Additional 12 counts of sex crimes against children Two year Grand Jury Investigation Molested victims in The Second Mile program Found guilty on 45 counts 4 charges had dropped

Others Involved First Indictment Assistant coach Mike McQueary walked in on Sandusky with young boy, reported incident to head coach Joe Paterno Paterno then informed Athletic Director Tim Curley Curley informed Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz (who oversaw Penn State Police) and both had meeting with McQueary Curley and Schultz failed to tell police, and falsely told Jury, McQueary never said anything to them. Paterno was forced to resign, along with Curley and Schultz

Sandusky had strategy to cull vulcunerble boys (between ages of 8-12) Targeted boys without father figure present in homes Through Second Mile program Initiated sexual behaviors in locker room showers Started in 2009, when one victim reported incident. Grand jury identified 8 boys that suffered sexual assaults from Sandusky from At least 20 incidents took place while Sandusky was still employed at Penn State 8 victims testified against Sandusky, detailing many accounts of sexual abuse. Mike McQueary testified in hearing and seeing Sandusky naked in showers with young boys and inappropriate behavior. After case was at jury, Matt Sandusky, one of six adopted children, stated he was a victim of sexual abuse from Sandusky.

Sentence November 2011, Sandusky banned from Penn State Campus Serving Sentence at State Correctional Institution prison Sentenced to years in prison January 2013, PA Judge denied request for a new trial

Quote In an interview, Sandusky was asked “Are you sexually attracted to young boys, underage boys?” His response… “Sexually attracted, you know, I enjoy young people. I love being around them. But no, I’m not sexually attracted to young boys.” Also said in interview (found later) was this statement… "I didn't go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that I've helped"

Theory The theory that explains Sandusky’s deviant behavior is the anomie theory. Sandusky had a good childhood, but his dad was heavily involved with charities and helping youth. There were no signs Sandusky was sexually abused, but he also got involved with youth programming. He wanted to be like his father and make a difference. He adopted and fostered many kids, and targeted boys without a father present in their lives. He wanted to live up to his dad’s legacy’s and culturally defined goals. However, he wasn’t quite able to, at least he felt he couldn’t and didn’t have legitimate opportunities to reach them, so he turned to abuse.

Rehabilitated or Punished? I believe that Sandusky should be punished. He repeatedly abused his power and sexually abused innocent boys through a program meant to help underprivileged individuals. He preyed on young, vulnerable boys who couldn’t defend themselves. He shouldn’t be allowed to be near any child ever again. He can function in society, and was able to hide his sexual abuse, so no correction facility would help. It wasn’t a one time offense, so he should be punished and deserves what he got.
