Was born on January 25, 1957 in Genova, Quindío, Colombia
Was raised in Western Colombia dealing with a harsh childhood
The oldest of 7 brothers
Only attended school for a few years
Was abused by father physically and mentally
Was sexually abused as a child
Became a drifter with a history of alcohol problems and psychiatric illness
Alone for the majority of his life
Never had a safe place to live because of the abuse
Luis had a hard time making friends and was alone with most that he did.
He had an issue with his family because he was unloved and unwanted
Luis, to feel fulfilled, decided to devote his time to making other people feel awful
He never had anyone to look up to and he blames Satan and Hitler for all he will do.

3. Crime Luis Garavito was captured on April 22, 1999.
He confessed to the murders of 140 children however he is still under investigations for 172 children in more than 59 towns in Colombia
He has done this for most of his life and was finally caught in 1999 because they were suspicious of a man who lured a boy to go with him.
All crimes prior to his capture have been unseen and undocumented.

4. Most Recent Crime
On April 22, 1999, he was investigated on suspension of kidnapping a young boy.
When they arrested Luis, he admitted to the rape and 1st degree murder of over 150 boys.

5. Evidence brought on him
The big one is that he confessed to all of these murders
He also told police where skeletons were that he buried
His fingerprints were also found on the most recent boy and he never denied one kill.

6. sentencing
He was convicted on 138 of the 172 cases for rape and 1st degree murder.
He did not even try to fight it because he knew he was caught red handed.
He is sentenced to 1,853 years but due to Colombia’s prison laws, he can only serve a max of 30 yrs.
But since he is cooperating with police and giving them places where the skeletons are, he could be out in 22 years.

7. Theory that explains his deviant behavior ~Differential-association theory
I chose this theory for my criminal because he does what he does because of the interactions he has learned with others. These others would be his father. His father raped him as a child. Since his father did that, his interactions with others have been based on that. He has associated himself with the behaviors and doings of his father. Since his childhood was destroyed, he wants to do the same to others.
Luis targeted younger poor boys. His target range was very similar to when it happened to him. He was poor and his family did not have it good. He was alone most of his life after he left his house because of the abuse he was receiving. Differential Association theory is definitely the theory that explains why Luis does what he does. He had a bad childhood so he decided to ruin others childhoods.
