Making Choices Y9 CEIAG DAY 1

The format of the day:  Period 1: Introduction  Periods 2 to 5: Information gathering  Period 6: Reflection 2

Yr. 9 Exams Firstly, you need to be aware of the importance of the exams you sat this week. The outcomes and results from these exams could have an influence on your future choices at this early stage, for example, they will help determine how many Bacc groups the school can offer when you are in Yr10. 3

In February you will be asked to choose the subjects that you will study in Years 10 and 11 Objectives:  You will need to have a good idea about the types of jobs or careers that are available to you.  You will need to understand the range of qualifications that you can study and which you will need for your chosen area.  You will need to consider what you might do when you finish Year 11 and the impact that this will have on any choices you make now 4

Your Choices  In February you will need to choose the subjects that you wish to study at KS4  This process is called the ‘Options Process’  You will be able to choose from a range of subjects but you need to make your choices carefully.  Today you will start to think about what you might do when you leave school. 5

Your teacher will give you a pack!  Firstly you need to think more carefully about the sort of person you are.  What interests do you have?  What skills do you have?  What jobs do you think that you would enjoy?  What would you dislike?  Complete pages 1-4 of your booklet.  Check what you have written with a friend - do they agree with it? 6

What are we? In pairs talk about what you think each of the following are and what they may involve:  GCSE  BTEC  Apprenticeship  A-Level Complete the matching sheet 7

Take note! Begin part 2 of your booklet.  Make notes on each qualification and make sure that you understand what they are.  As the day goes on you need to take your booklet with you and complete each section as you go  At the end of the day you will use the information you have found to think about your option choices in Y10 8

What is the E-Bacc?  It is a suite of qualifications that the government believe that you need to access certain courses post-16 and post-18 and that you need to gain entry to a Russell Group University (one of the top universities).  The qualifications include: Maths, English, 2 Sciences, MFL and either History or Geography.  Some of you will automatically be put into these subjects. Others can opt for them. 9

Qualifications  So now you know what the different qualifications are.  Qualifications are your ‘currency’ when you leave school. What does this mean?  Do you know what careers are available to you?  Do you know what qualifications you will need for those jobs? Complete the next 2 questions in your pack. 10

Today you will:  Be finding out about different pathways you can take at 16 and at 18  Be finding out about a specific job/career area.  You will learn about what you can do, how much you can earn and what qualifications you will need to do that job.  You will find out about yourself. What are you likely to achieve in KS4?  You will find out more about ‘the world of work’  You will have an insight into what life is like at university 11

And now…  You will be given a time table for the day you will spend about 25 minutes in each session and then move onto the next  In the last session you will start to think about what options you may want to take next year. 12

Reflection (Last Session )  Look at your booklet from today  Use the information you have got to think about your future; what sort of job do you want to do?  What will you have to do to get that job ?  What are you good at? 13

Options  Look at pg 11 of your booklet. Tick the 2 or 3 subjects you think you might want to do ( remember to think about what sort of job you might want )  Pg 12 - for each option say why you would chose it. 14

Don’t Worry  YOU ARE NOT MAKING A FIRM COMMITMENT TODAY !!! WE just need an idea of how many people MAY want to do each subject  This list may change and we may add more subjects or we may remove some subjects 15

Things to think about  Today has been an introduction to the options process, about which you will be learning a lot more after Christmas. The process will :  Options assembly  Options evening  Option forms in  Final options determined Your form tutor will keep you informed of the dates of these 16

In the meantime  It is a very good idea to gather additional information and advice in order that you can make informed decisions that are going to work for you and for your future.  The following people will be able to provide information:  Connexions  Subject teachers  Form tutors  Older pupils  Parents / family members. 17
