SUMMARY A summary is a condensed (short!) version of the events. It is the main idea. SUMMARY

If a text is a few paragraphs, a one- sentence summary is enough. But if a text is pages long, a one- paragraph summary is needed. Expanded Summary

EXPANDED SUMMARY This contains the main idea. The main idea is supported by events/ reasons. Events/reasons are supported by details. EXPANDED SUMMARY

Expanded Summary for Ch. 19: List the main events or dominant impressions in chap. 19. Decide on a main idea. Write a rough draft (one paragraph) to turn in within the next 10 min. Expanded Summary for Ch. 19:

Write a one-paragraph summary of the entire chapter. Start with a topic sentence that summarizes the events or mood of the chapter. Then list the three most important events that happened in chronological order. Use transitions: first, second, third. Add a detail to each event. (event1 + detail; event2 + detail; event 3 + detail) Close with one sentence that predicts what might happen next. Minimum of 8 sentences total!!!! Ch. 17 or 18 . . . SUMMARIZE.

Mentor Text (for Chap. 15): Ishmael could not believe what happened to him in chapter 15 and could not emotionally handle it. First of all, UNICEF showed up on the scene, and his lieutenant basically set him free (132). The problem is that he did not want to leave now. Second, he was in mental torment throughout the chapter for several reasons. He felt betrayed and struggled with a drug addiction (132). Moreover, he was addicted to violence (133). Third, the most critical situation was the fact that UNICEF ignorantly mixed the military army child soldiers with the RUF child soldiers. The combination was a recipe for disaster (135). Ishmael will have a difficult time coming back because he is a long way gone mentally and emotionally. Mentor Text (for Chap. 15):
