Assertion, Claim or topic sentence. This is an argument you are making within this paragraph. It is not a summary of something in the novel, but a claim you are making to support your thesis.  X eXample, A quote or fact from a source to support your assertion  E Explanation What does your quote or fact prove? This is your analysis of what your example means.  S Significance... This is the "So What?" of your paragraph. Why is this important? What does it relate to?
